The Salem High School Alumni Association is unique. The organization not only keeps alive memories of high school days and old friends among graduates of SHS, but it has acquired a more meaningful purpose in developing an annual program of scholarship grants to deserving graduates.
The scope of the scholarship program is astonishing for a small college, let alone a high school. As of 2002, the Association has given a total of $2,685,937.50 in scholarships to 1389 students. An active, responsive group, its members rally 'round each June at an Alumni Banquet to honor the 50-year graduating class, recognize a distinguished alumnus, and bestow scholarships on the most recent graduates.
Officers of the Association are elected each year, and a scholarship committee of members works with the high school to select deserving and qualified students to receive the awards.
In 1983, through the generosity of a former graduate, a 15-year rent free lease for downtown office space was given to the Association. During 1983 and 1984, the offices were extensively remodeled in a Williamsburg decor and were opened to the public in June, 1984. During the summer, a limited mail solicitation to members of 18 classes brought a heartwarming response, enabling the Association to buy furniture for the new offices. One function of the office is to display artifacts that came from the estate of Laura Mae Whinnery, unofficial Salem High historian who died in 1984.

What Role Can Boosters Play in Recruiting Prospective Student-Athletes?
In Division I, boosters - representatives of athletics interests - are prohibited from becoming involved in recruiting activities. Thus, they cannot make in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, and they cannot write or telephone prospects, their relatives, or legal guardians. If a prospect initiates a telephone call to a booster, the booster may speak to the prospect, however, the booster must refer all questions about the FAMU athletics program to the Athletics Department staff. In Division I, boosters may not contact prospects' coaches, principals, or counselors in an attempt to evaluate prospects, and they cannot visit prospects' schools to pick up transcripts or films pertaining to evaluation of the prospects' academic or athletic ability.
What happens if boosters make incidental contacts with prospects?

About The Association
The mission of the new alumni group is to help graduates and staff members work together for the common good of alumni, current students and the high school.
The idea of an alumni association is not new. A thriving West High alumni group existed as early as the 1880s and as late 1930s, historical records show.
However, interest and support for West High may never have been greater than it is today. West High sports and performing arts remain the cultural heart of the District 129 community. Both the student population and the facility on Galena Boulevard are expanding. Last year the district added more classrooms, science labs, a choral room, greenhouse and field house to West High. This June more than 600 seniors graduated in the football stadium packed with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, teachers and friends.
During its first year the Alumni Association has concentrated on acquiring a database and signing up new members so that it could be in the position to better serve the interests of graduates. The May 2005 publication of a first-ever alumni directory, a project of Harris Publishing Co. and School District 129, significantly assisted this effort.
The alumni group has also worked with the school district to build this highly interactive alumni Web site. These pages will allow West High graduates to keep in touch with each other, find reunion information, and get involved with the Alumni.

Alumni Favorite "Barn" Stories Welcome to the Harrison High School Alumni Association Web Site. Our primary organizational goal is to provide a variety of services to our nearly 10,000 graduates of Harrison High School. We would also like to provide a means for the graduates of Battle Ground, East Tipp, and Klondike High Schools to enjoy these same benefits and also serve as a clearinghouse for their existing alumni programs. Our vision for this organization is to create a mutually beneficial partnership between the school and our alumni. We want to produce weekly informational updates accessible to all our graduates. We believe it is important to let you know about the exciting happenings at Harrison High School. We also feel it is critical to create a means for our previous graduating classes to share information about upcoming events, such as alumni reunions. Finally, we feel it is important to provide a way to recognize the accomplishments of many of our graduates. We have alumni all over the world involved in a wide variety of occupations. We hope to serve as a clearinghouse for this information. As this organization develops we hope to initiate a series of fund raising activities, from small yearly dues, to major requests designed to provide scholarship funds to our current and future graduates, assist our academic departments in special project purchases, provide teacher mini-grants to assist our professional staff in improving instruction, assist in funding for large facility curricular, co-curricular, and extra curricular development, and funding for the technical support necessary to conduct these services.
