Alumni Council College Relations Group Report on the Trustee Student Life Initiative
June 30, 1999 The report of the Alumni Council College Relations Group summarizes alumni response to the Student Life Initiative (SLI). The report is divided into two main sections: general alumni perspectives on the SLI, gathered between February and May, 1999; and Alumni Council input, gathered during the Council's spring meeting, May 20-22, 1999. General alumni feedback came from a variety of sources: the College's web site; the CRG's own e-mail address; letters; and telephone calls. This response can be characterized as reaction to early published statements from the College, press coverage, and electronic communications among the alumni network. The Alumni Council, in its deliberations, had the opportunity to listen and speak to trustees, administrators, students and each other, and in this sense became much better educated than the general alumni population about the SLI.

Creating Alumni Organizations for the 21st Century
A task force of alumni is on a mission to bring the 151-year-old Association of Alumni and the 92-year-old Alumni Council into the modern era to serve both Dartmouth and its 65,000-member alumni body more effectively. "Our objective is to create a better organization, one that's more democratic and transparent and more easily understood by alumni," says Joe Stevenson '57, chairman of the nine-member Task Force on Alumni Governance. The task force, formed last spring by the two organizations it hopes to reform, was charged to draft a joint alumni constitution that would pass muster with three-quarters of Dartmouth alumni after an earlier proposal narrowly failed to win approval.

UH and other college career centers help keep alumni out of unemployment lines
By John K. Borchardt
In today's continuously restructuring business environment, many Houston professionals look for new jobs several times in the course of their careers. Houston-area universities and colleges are committed to helping their alumni succeed in the ever competitive business world, so in order to meet a growing need for career guidance and job hunting support, they are supplying an increasing number of career services to their alumni, with many added over the past year. University of Houston
At the University of Houston, University Career Services provides career decision-making and professional job search assistance for Houston Alumni Organization members. Services include career assessment and private career counseling, vocational testing, job search workshops, access to job postings by employers and employer research. Fees are involved for some services, with HAO members receiving a 10 percent discount. Some UH alumni serve as volunteer advisers to students and alumni helping them make informed career decisions and launch effective job searches.

Alumni Nominations
Dear Dartmouth alumnus/alumna, Would you help put the finishing touches on a set of recommendations to strengthen the voice of alumni at Dartmouth? At issue are the structure of the College's alumni organizations and the process by which 62,000 alumni nominate nearly half the members of the College's Board of Trustees.
Beginning in the fall of 2001, a joint committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Council and the Association of Alumni studied alumni governance, asking alumni, administrators and trustees for their suggestions at 11 regional and Hanover-based forums. Having received plenty of thoughtful advice, the Joint Committee on Alumni Governance and Trustee Nominations presented its recommendations to the Council and Association in December 2002. The report seeks "(1) a streamlined, representative alumni structure through which the voice of 62,000 alumni would be channeled and conveyed to the Board of Trustees and College administration and (2) an alumni trustee nominating process that better balances the need for highly accomplished trustees with alumni enfranchisement." We invite you to comment on these recommendations jointcomm@alum.dartmouth.org

If you would like to join the Alumni News group, please click here . Include your name, name at time of graduation (if different from current), and the year you graduated. Please note that by signing up for this group, your name is placed on an e-mail list, and you will be receiving e-mail from the Alumni Association. See below for more information about the newsgroup. The Alumni Association has focused on areas that can improve the communication channel between the college and alumni. To that end, one of the projects of the Alumni Association is to build a network of e-mail addresses so news of Juniata events can be shared. The staff and administration are in total support of this effort. I receive news items of campus happenings and sports updates and send them out about once a week (less frequently over the summer break). We can also communicate with one another to rekindle relationships or to make new friends! Once a month I send an update list to show who has joined the group. Also, two times a year you will receive a master list organized by class year so you can locate friends. There are more than 1100 alumni in the group now.

Students, the college, and university have benefited significantly from his contributions as a student, agricultural leader, and benefactor." Wampler studied poultry science at Virginia Tech and received a bachelor's degree in 1950. Following graduation, his first contributions to the university included making Wampler farms and facilities available as sites for field testing and applied research for Virginia Tech faculty.
