Why Rubrics? Think of the word "rubric" as a verb, it is the action of telling a performer (learner) tips to improve their performance/product. It becomes a noun when one creates a document that records the tips. The document maybe formatted as a grid or a list of indicators. Both representing the necessary elements of each stage of competency (very proficient to not yet proficient). Ask yourself these questions.
i f students have a clear understanding of the standards and expectations, their potential for success might be greater? if teachers had a tool for communicating specific and immediate feedback, effectively and efficiently, there would be a greater probability for it? if students are to become self-reliant, self-directed, self-assessing learners they must have the opportunity to practice self-reliance, self-assessment and self-direction? if parents understood their child's growth and progress in clear terms, they might assume a greater role in their child's learning?

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM...
The Amphitheater School District Governing Board created the Amphitheater Alternative High School Program to meet the needs of students who, for a variety of reasons, learn best by following a non-traditional path. The Alternative Program is located on a separate campus and serves students from high schools in the Amphitheater District. The goals of the Program include helping students to earn graduation credit, improve academic skills, refine decision-making and problem-solving techniques, and explore educational and vocational opportunities after high school.

All of our students make notable progress not only in academics but in self-management issues as well. At CFAS we have developed a four element program:
  • Self-Management
  • Individualized Curriculum
  • Vocational Education/Internship
  • Parent Participation The program guides students toward achieving goals they have set for themselves.

Fax: (859) 624-4566 The purpose of Madison Alternative School is to help students develop more positive attitudes towards themselves, their education, and others with whom they come in contact. The intent of the school's program is to address inappropriate student behaviour and to give special help to the student in solving his/her problems rather than merely to punish and control him/her. The program will not be a focus on the negative thought about why young people get into trouble, but rather on the positive aspects of how they develop into healthy, productive adults. Young people become productive when they are able to feel useful and competent, possess a sense of belonging, and see themselves and others in a positive light. They should never have to carry the added burden of being tagged with negative labels. The students that the Madison Alternative program intends to help would need to change their attitudes, values, and motivation toward education, themselves, and others. The students can be identified as having one or more of the following characteristics:
  • Negative attitude toward school. School is not a place they enjoy and want to spend their time.
