Alternative Schools Accountability Model (ASAM)
Provides state-mandated accountability for alternative schools serving very high-risk student populations. The Alternative Schools Accountability Model (ASAM) provides accountability for alternative schools serving very high-risk, highly mobile students. These schools include community day, continuation, opportunity, county community, county court, California Youth Authority, and other alternative schools that meet stringent criteria set by the State Board of Education. The ASAM is a multiple-indicator system that includes performance and pre-post assessment indicators approved by the State Board of Education, and state assessment results as summarized in the Academic Performance Index. ASAM schools select indicators and report data at the end of each school year.
School Reports
The ASAM School Reports are posted for public review.

Schools of the Week: Alternative Schools
Alternative schools were popularized recently on British television's Channel 4 . The American version is called Brat Camp and appears on ABC . Turn-About Ranch, pictured above, was featured in that series. So just why are alternative schools so popular? Parents turn to them as the appropriate educational choice for many reasons. Children with emotional problems respond to the individualized attention which alternative schools offer. If your child has a substance abuse problem or serious behavioral issues, then time spent away from family and friends in an isolated setting will have positive effects. There is an alternative school and program to suit your needs. Explore them here. As with choosing any school, ask an educational consultant for advice. She knows her schools and will save you much time and wasted effort. After all, choosing the right school really means finding the right fit for your child. Get that right and the desired results will follow.

  • The quality of an alternative school consists of two main components:
    • the program (i.e., the school climate, curriculum, including the school location, the activities, etc.), and b) the staff (i.e., the teachers, the administrative staff etc). Thus three main categories of problems can occur
Sometimes there are good curricula, but poor implementation; other times there are great teachers in poor working environments. There are some alternative schools with excellent staff and a well-designed curriculum; and in the alternative systems of most concern are poor teachers, with poor curriculum. More so than in mainstream education, there area a wide variety in the quality of alternative schools - e.g., Montessori, Steiner, Charter Schools, Schools for Troubled Youth, Outdoor Education. Some programs are fantastic, many are OK, and some have significant problems. Look for evidence of the degree of match between the stated mission and goals and the actual curriculum/practice - because there is little standardization across alternative schools, be aware that actual program content varies considerably.

Alternative public schools for disruptive students. Elizabeth Brackett of WTTW, Chicago reports. ELIZABETH BRACKETT: Sitting quietly in class, 16- year-old Amy Allen doesn't look like a troubled teen-ager, but last year Allen was expelled from her Chicago high school after stealing the school watchman's car. She wound up in this alternative school in Chicago, which she now says is the best thing that could have happened to her. AMY ALLEN: If it wasn't here, I really think I would have went a lot farther downhill than uphill 'cause when you come here, it's like the teachers, they motivate you, and they give you, like, better things to think of. And they give you more goals to look at. And they make sure you don't do anything bad, you know? They're like, "you are going to finish high school, go on to college." And you know, that gives you, like, self-esteem. You're like, "hey, I can do it. If she thinks so, then I have to think so." ELIZABETH BRACKETT: The Crawford First high school is one of 12 alternative schools in the Chicago system. Though alternative education once meant a whole range of options to public education, in Illinois it now means public schools for disruptive students who are about to be expelled or Chicago School Board President Gery Chico says it is essential to provide options other than expulsion.
