Why Fuel Cells As we enter the 21st Century our main source of mechanical power is the thermal engine. This technology converts energy with 40% efficiency (no waste heat recovery) and in many cases as low as 10% (vehicle on urban cycle with air conditioning). Fuel Supply, global warming and local pollution levels in large cities are major issues. Growth in the demand for energy will ensure the introduction of the hydrogen economy in the next 100 years. However the precise time scale is uncertain because so much depends on peoples actions. The problem for those of us in fuel cells is to chart a safe passage through these uncertainties and right now (2002) that passage is to develop the static power market. What are Fuel Cells Fuel Cells are devices which convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity and water. The process is reversible so that you can convert gas into electricity or electricity into gas and water. The latter is used to provide artificial environments in spacecraft, whilst the former is used in the breathalyser - yes a fuel cell voltage measures the alcohol strength in your breath. Fuel cells are not new. What is new is that we now have the materials and technology to make them cheaply.

It brought great changes to economies and lifestyles in less than 200 years. Nothing else to date can equal the enormous impact which the use of oil has had on so many people, so rapidly, and in so many ways around the world. But oil is a finite resource. The common question "How long will oil be produced?" is the wrong question. The critical question is "When is the date of the maximum daily amount of world oil productionthe peak?" After that oil will be an irreversibly declining resource facing an increasing demand which cannot be met. The world passed its peak of rate of oil discoveries in the 1960s, but there is a lag time from discovery to full production. Although estimates differ slightly, it seems clear that the peak of world oil production will be reached at least by 2020, and possibly within the next decade (Campbell 1997; Campbell & Laherrere 1998; Ivanhoe 1995). One statistic points up the need to think about alternative energy sources; the world now uses about 26 billion barrels of oil a year, and in new field discoveries we are finding less than 5.5 billion barrels annually. The world is going out of the oil business. With the many good things which oil now does for us, what will happen when we no longer have it? What are the possible alternatives to oil? Can any one of them or all combined really fill the gap left by the depletion of oil?

THE OIL AGE We live in the Oil age, which gives us a higher degree of prosperity than has ever before been achieved. Our houses, our schools, universities, hospitals and transport systems allow most of us to live better than any king in previous ages. Most of these achievements are due to the use of machines that consume oil. Present day agriculture uses oil to power tractors, enabling less than 2% of the population to be employed in farming, and frees the rest of us to take up other (often previously unheard of) occupations. Oil allows us to travel both locally and across the world in a manner and in numbers impossible for previous generations. It brings the world's produce to our doorstep and in addition it heats us in winter and is the raw material for many plastics, medicines, pesticides, paint and clothing. This oil age is likely to last for the very short period of about 200 years. Last year it was estimated that the world had used 820 billion barrels of oil, that the known reserves of oil (mainly in Middle East countries) were about the same.
