Reviews of Agroecology: Ecological Processes in Sustainable Agriculture Review from the IPM Practitioner Review from Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture , vol. 7 Review from Biological Agriculture and Horticulture , vol. 16 Review from Journal of Environmental Quality , vol. 28 Review from American Journal of Alternative Agriculture , vol. 15 From Integrated Pest Management Practitioner , February, 1998, published by the Bio-Integral Resource Center How are we to put "culture" back into agriculture? This is one of the many questions posed and answered in this impressive publication. Agroecology is a simply written and beautifully organized presentation of a very complex subject. Right from the start, the author orients the reader by giving his recommendations for using the textbook, while accommodating various levels of knowledge. The first half of the book, divided into section I, "Introduction to Agroecology," and section II, "Plants and Environmental Factors," teaches the basics. Chapter 1, "The Need for Sustainable Food Production Systems," begins with the author's definition of agroecologyhow applying ecological concepts and principles to the design and management of systems of food production can help us produce food more sustainably. Gliessman's definition, and his book, emphasize a scientific approach to sustainable agriculture. Although agroecology authors sometimes put relatively little emphasis on laboratory and experiment station research, and considerably more emphasis on farm-based experiments, the approach here is more balanced.

Albrecht, William A. "Loss Of Soil Organic Matter And Its Restoration"
Soils and Men: USDA Yearbook of Agriculture. Washington, D.C., United States Department of Agriculture, 1938. Each year, the practice going on for several decades, the United States Department of Agriculture published a yearbook. This particular Yearbook of Agriculture, Soils and Men , is widely considered the best of the lot. And this article by William Albrecht may well be It is our hope to eventually present the entire yearbook online. PUBLIC DOMAIN Albrecht, William A. "The Drought Myth: The Absence of Water Is Not The Problem." Pinched from the Acres.usa website. It is not possible at this time to determine the complete citation for this article; it could be one of three different original publications. However, Acres has put it online and thus, effectively, tossed it into the public domain. Explains that much of the apparency of moisture stress is subsoil infertility. Some have experienced that foliar feeding of apparently moisture-stressed crops will "cure" them. Downloads as a small PDF.

In 1935, there were 6.8 million farms in the United States, and the average farmer produced enough food to feed 20 people. In 2002, the number of farms was estimated to be 2.16 million, and the average U.S. farmer produced enough food each year to feed more than 100 people. In addition to providing an abundant food supply for domestic markets, crops from nearly one-third of U.S. farm acreage are exported to overseas customers. Consumers have benefited from American food production capabilities. The percentage of income Americans spend on food has dropped by 50 percent since the early 1900s. Statistics for the year 2000 show that Americans are spending 10.6 percent of their disposable income on all food consumed both at home and away from home. This figure has dropped dramatically over the years, from a high of 25.3 percent in 1933, 20.5 percent in 1950, and 15.1 percent in 1965.

New Alternative Agriculture Center
Subtitle G of Title XVI, Alternative Agricultural Research and Commercialization (AARC), is designed to help expedite industrial products from agricultural materials to the marketplace. It encompasses research, development, and other activities to advance new products or processes into the marketplace for non-feed, non-food, nontraditional forest or fiber products. Success would help diversify agricultural markets, foster rural economic development, provide environmentally friendly products, reduce imports, encourage private-public cooperation, and increase return on investment of taxpayer dollars. A new entity is to be created within USDA to administer the AARC subtitle. Regional Centers (no bricks and mortar) at host institutions will assist in implementing the programs on a regional basis after $5 million are appropriated. (At present only $4.5 million have been appropriated). The USDA has been soliciting recommendations for nine nominees to the Alternative Agricultural Research and Commercialization Board. The Board will be appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture (Edward Madigan) and is to be responsible for general supervision and policy control of AARC. For more information consult Mark Dungan, Office of the Secretary, room 200A, USDA, Washington DC 20250.
