66. From Alternative Agriculture To The Food Industry: The Need For Changes In Food
From alternative agriculture to the Food Industry The Need for Changes in Food The EU regulation is general and meant to be extended by implementation,
http://www.jrc.es/pages/iptsreport/vol20/english/FOO3E206.htm
From Alternative Agriculture to the Food Industry: The Need for Changes in Food Policy Niels Heine Kristensen and Thorkild Nielsen , Technical University of Denmark Issue: The development of organic agriculture has developed bottom-up, emerging from the 'counterculture' characterized by organic farmers, environmentalists and 'political' consumers. National authorities and supranational institutions have responded by establishing rules and control systems for organic agriculture over the last decade. Organic food production is now developing fast in some EU member states. This recent development is not only marked by more positive attitudes towards organic products from the food industry but also by an increasing need for a matching response in terms of food policy. Relevance: The EU regulation 2092/91/EEC is mainly focused on organic agriculture but as the food industry enters this field the need emerges for a more specific interpretation, development and implementation of the organic principles and methods in processing, handling and distribution. Whether the development of EU regulations will meet future consumer demands will be of great importance. Introduction
Even though this production system has been successful for decades, the increasing number of symptoms indicate a need to assess the overall production regime behind it. A search for other possible production regimes would come out with organic production as a relatively new but successful production system. This article investigates to what extend and under what conditions the organic production system offers a realistic alternative.

If you have critics, it is always good to have aternatives as well. What kind of development and agriculture would be better for Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay? First we have to say it is not up to us to decide about this. But here we give some short answers anyway: The best alternative for GMOs is simple: no GMOs. There is widespread consensus that yields have not increased with transgenic crops. Not did the use of herbicides per hectare decrease. Because the seeds are more expensive the farmers have lower profits. It is maybe even worse that farmers get much more dependent on the seed owners and traders.

WHAT IS "SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE?"
In earlier sections of this unit on agriculture, we've seen that we are simultaneously decreasing the carrying capacity ("K") of Earth for humans through land degradation , while at the same time human population (and the demand for agricultural products) continues to increase. Such contrasting trajectories (decreasing "K" and increasing population) would, over time, result in disaster, or something close to that. Fortunately, many agronomists, ecologists, economists, and others involved with food and population issues recognize this, and increased attention is being paid to "sustainable" or "alternative" agriculture. What do "sustainable" or "alternative" agriculture mean? "Alternative" agriculture is more loosely defined than is sustainable agriculture, and it generally refers to agricultural practices that are different than those used in conventional Green Revolution style agriculture. For example, farming practices that decrease reliance on inorganic fertilizers as the primary source of fertility (see "Soil fertility"

A guidebook is available to assist rural and farm residents who are considering alternative enterprises. Farming Alternatives: A Guide to Evaluating the Feasibility of New Farm-Based Enterprises, NRAES-32 , takes the reader through a step-by-step analysis of a potential new business. The guidebook uses a case study and workbook format to evaluate personal and family considerations, available resources, alternative enterprise options, market potential, production feasibility, profitability, cash flow, and a final evaluation of all factors combined. In addition to providing a format for evaluating an alternative enterprise, the guidebook provides sources of information for specific materials. Starting a new venture requires resources, careful management, hard work, and risk. Before committing time and resources to an enterprise, it is important to look at the feasibility of the idea on paper. Each chapter of Farming Alternatives includes exercises-self-tests, checklists, and work sheets-that allow the reader to analyze an enterprise idea and build business management skills. The reader will take an inventory to identify underutilized resources that can be used in a new enterprise, perform market research to determine who will buy a product or service, and plan the production aspects of the enterprise. An income statement and cash flow analysis will be prepared to determine profitability and the financial feasibility of starting and operating the enterprise. The guidebook even explains how to combine the documents to present a proposal to a lender.
