Posted: 06-25-05 5:43pm Hey. I think I am finally getting somewhere after 5 years of trying to get a diagnosis...I have just had my first pain clinic appointment and have recieved an opinion by one of the top docs in the area. I was born with spinal meningitis and at the age of 14, came down with a mysterious virus. I was severely ill for about a month- in and out of the hospital, couldn't walk, no appetite whatsoever, prolonged fever that peaked at 105, etc. I was put through the usual battery of tests for epstein barr, lupus, different types of cancers, all sorts of different things. I remember thinking: "my worst nightmare would be for this to continue into something chronic".
I can't think of anymore right now but there might be a few other things. I was misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia and atypical chronic migraines, and for a while was thought to have lupus. My mri is normal except for some lacunar infarcts- which my previous doctor had ignored. My new doctor says that the infarctions are not normal, and considering my symptoms, are characterisitc of a seizure disorder. She has diagnosed me with a central pain disorder which she believes is akin to post-polio disease...(post-meningitis in my case). She says that I do not have fibro whatsoever and that the old doc was an idiot for not paying closer attention to the specific neurological syptoms I have. She says that she thinks what is going on is a post-stroke disorder where I am having petit mal seizures (possibly during sleep as well as while I am awake). I was reading today about 'auras' (pertaining to seizures, not migraines) and some of it sounds very familiar.

Neuro-opthalmologic Tests And Hydrocephalus
Posted: 02-19-04 6:51am Hello,
my 3 years old daughter was diagnosed with congenital blocking hydrocephalus when she was 8 weeks old. She was operated on right away and a shunt was placed, that is functioning well. She is developing very well, and is a happy, bright, articulate and above-average intelligent 3 years old. You would not guess by looking at her, talking to her or playing with her that anything is not 100% about her... We have annual dr visits with the neurosurgeon, and at the last one he said she would have to be checked by a neuro-opthalmologyst before her next check-up. This is to prevent the need to have an annual ct, he said. I am looking for any information available, to understand exactly what test we have to expect, and the connection between the test's results and her condition.

I've been following the Iraq war very closely. It's pathetic and horrible to say, but this war is giving me something to watch on tv. It it just me or does someone else out there see this war as a complete waste of human life? All of these healthy young people... American or Iraqi... sacrificing their healthy bodies to stupidity. Such a waste. There are a lot of angry sick people like me out there. Maybe we should be the ones to go so if we get killed there is less of a loss. That won't work because I think, in general, people who are suffering just value life more and wouldn't be able to pull the trigger. Maybe you could just pile us up in a plane and drop us on the enemy. Or just drop us off and force them to take care of us. This country has so many severely ill and suffering people that the "war" would be over lickity split.

On Sunday I felt horrifically sick and slept horribly. The nausea, head pain and stiff neck and feverish feeling was just BAD. On Monday I skipped my IV doxy to give my body a break and resumed yesterday. I'm feeling much better. I find that I'm often dehydrated so I must be more diligent about taking in fluids.

ALS / LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE:  Nutritional Causes, Prevention and Therapies
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neuro-
degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and the spinal column.  They
control the voluntary muscles, which in turn allow movement.  The progressive degeneration of the motor
neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis eventually leads to their death.
Over a period of months or years, ALS causes increasing muscle weakness, inability to control muscle
movement, and problems with speaking, swallowing, and breathing.  However, thinking ability, bladder
and bowel control, sexual function, and the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) are unaffected.
Each year, 1 to 2 per 100,000 people develop ALS, with men being affected slightly more often than
women.  ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries, and although it may develop at any age, it is most common in middle-aged and older adults.
