We know there are problems with reproductive health among humans. It's hard to know what the cause is. But we know that if the problem is the environment, it's going to show up first in species with shorter life cycles than ours. Scientists are hard pressed to understand how a diverse order of animals that has been on Earth for 200 million years should be highly vulnerable to an environmental change so subtle that experts can not agree what it is. The San Francisco Chronicle In lab studies, female rats exposed to vinclozolin, a synthetic chemical widely used to kill fungus on fruit, gave birth to males with female traits.
The plight of Lake Apopka's alligators is an extraordinary case of what some scientists say is a widespread problem. Wildlife at a Superfund site might be expected to have some health complications, but [University of Florida professor Louis] Guillette and his colleagues see similar problems with alligators at other Florida lakes, only to a lesser degree. In fact, every lake that Guillette's team has examined has shown unexpectedly low alligator egg viability. National Federation of Wildlife

The Alligators of South Texas
The stereotype of Texas as a country of cowboys, long-horned cattle and the Wild West is so strong that most Europeans are unaware that there is a healthy alligator population over there. Even United States residents are often surprised to find out that the southeastern portion of Texas near the Gulf of Mexico has lakes, bayous, and coastal marshes that provide habitat for these reptiles and other swamp dwellers. This alligator bellows raising his head out of the water. He puffs out his throat and, with mouth closed, begins to vibrate the air.
I have spent the past two years in South Texas, photographing the behaviour and life cycle of the American alligators. I became crazy over them. They are truly remarkable creatures with fascinating lives. Today, I am still taking picture of them for up coming books and magazines. I photograph Texas wild alligators in private ranchs -some ranch owners don’t know there are so many alligators on their land- and also in a few State Parks and Wildlife Refuges. Alligators are long-lived, social animals that are territorial. They have bellows that are distinct enough so that other alligators are believed to be able to recognize the caller without seeing him or her. This may function not only in breeding activities, but also in setting up and keeping territories, warning juveniles and subadults to stay out of a territory, and facilitating the dispersion of alligators more evenly throughout a particular habitat.

South Florida Wildlife
Viewing Locations This webpage is a guide to locations for wildlife viewing in south Florida including Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. Webpage released: 7 Feb 2002
This page last updated: 5 June 2005 Home Snakes Lizards Introduction I lived in south Florida from July 2000 until June 2003 after having lived mainly in Chicago. On 10 June 2003 I moved from Homestead Florida to Valdosta Georgia. I am fascinated by all the wildlife in the SE USA, so I have been taking lots of photos and putting them up on my website. Photos were taken with Pentax Spotmatic or Spotmatic II.
All the photos were taken by me.
All creatures in the photos are alive, wild and not restrained. This website developed by Tom Spinker

I make no warranties as to the accuracy of any of the information on this website. I moved away from south Florida on
10 June 2003 so this page is becoming more and more out-of-date. First we cover areas other than those along the Main Park Road in Everglades National Park. (When I tried to put everything on one map it got too crowded). Here is a crude map of the south tip of Florida:

Orlando Florida is rich in animals, birds and natural habitats. Take the opportunity to experience a natural environment which is different from most others. Because Florida experiences tropical weather, the wildlife is more exotic that that found in colder climates. Alligators, pink flamingos and manatees are some of the many species of wildlife found in Orlando See alligators in their natural environment, or view them up close at a park such as Gatorland . You will see them many times in the wild as you drive along side lakes and waterways. Alligators do live in the wild in Florida, so be careful about where you swim. Wildlife in Hilton Head
Hilton Head Island is full of natural inhabitants that are enjoyable to observe.
Bird Watching
Bird watchers love Hilton Head. There are inshore and offshore birds to watch. Shorebirds are fun to watch while they hunt for fish with their skinny legs and long beaks. Brown pelican, egret, ibis, wood storks, and osprey can been seen on the shores and marshes.
Loggerhead Turtles
An endangered species, the endangered Loggerhead Turtle is present in Hilton Head and begins its life buried in the sand as a young hatchling. The mother deposits 50-150 eggs in a nest in the sand then she journeys back into the ocean leaving the eggs to hatch. The newborn turtles will also escape to the ocean for safety. The turtles can grow to be 350lbs and have the capability to swim up to about 25 miles per hour. The Loggerhead Turtle also has the strongest beak of all Atlantic sea turtles. Naturally, there are strict laws that protect the turtles. If you find a nest, you should call the local authorities at (843-785-3818). Be sure to not disturb them since heavy fines can be imposed. Many citizens on Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry devote themselves to the safety of these sea creatures.

Animal wildlife - Alligators in the Sewer
By Donna F. Wilson Forget about alligators in the sewer, because one West Texas school found them on the practice field, shortly before school was scheduled to begin. Anyone who has followed the weather news knows that Texas has been inundated with floods, and it was this that led the alligators to come to a school in Dallas. Oh, they didn't come to eat. No, not at all, they came for the party of the decade. They were joined by such notables as poisonous snakes, bobcats, and others of the animal kingdom. The armadillos refused the invitation, saying "They had far too much on their plates." In recent years, Texas streets and suburbs have seen an outgrowth of animals wanting a home in the housing districts. Our on home, is a place of residence to a very snooty possum. As a result of late night visits, our cat's food bowl has been moved to the kitchen, so that the possum might make her own way in the world. We live three streets away from an open field, and it is not at all unusual to hear the cry of coyotes, or see scampering raccoons during the early morning hours. Life, such it is in the animal kingdom, has returned to the days of the Wild West. I'm waiting for the night when we hear the thundering of buffalo hooves coming down the street. Our town possesses the rare sightings of two red foxes, one white fox, and the creek-wandering mountain lion. Bobcats have for years come out of Post Oak creek to snatch the small prey, more abundant
