American Alligator ... Make a Difference American Alligator Alligator Mississippiensis)
Factoid: A member of the crocodile family, alligators are living fossils that can be traced back 230 million years.
Status: First listed as an endangered species in 1967, the American alligator was removed from the endangered species list in 1987 after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pronounced a complete recovery of the species.
Population: Once on the brink of extinction, well over a million alligators can be found today in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia.
Threats: Once hunted for their hides, alligators today are threatened mainly by habitat loss and encounters with people. Survival: Alligators can live 35 to 50 years in the wild. In captivity, 60 to 80 years. The American alligator is the largest reptile in North America. The alligator can be distinguished from the American crocodile by its short, rounded snout and black color. Adult alligators can reach up to 18 feet in length, although the average is 13 feet. An alligator's tail accounts for half of length. Male alligators, or bulls, are generally larger than females. On average, they weigh from 450 to 600 pounds.

The Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program is administered by the Division of Hunting and Game Management through contracts between the Commission and nuisance alligator trappers. Approximately 40 private trappers are contracted to remove specific nuisance alligators. Individuals may call the toll-free number to submit complaints regarding nuisance alligators. The Commission will evaluate the complaint and determine if the alligator should be removed by a licensed nuisance alligator trapper. This program permits the harvest of alligators that are determined to be a threat to the welfare of the public, or the public’s pets, livestock, or property.
In 2004, the Commission received 18,072 nuisance alligator complaints. Nuisance alligator trappers were issued 15,485 permits and tags and removed 7,352 nuisance alligators. Read about the history of Florida's nuisance alligator program and about Living with Alligators.

PROTECTED

The American Alligator Alligator mississippiensis , is found in freshwater throughout the state. It has a large (10-19') black body with a broad, rounded snout and lives an average of 40 years.
The American Alligator is the official state reptile and the mascot of the University of Florida.
It has excellent eyesight even at night. Its jaws hold 70-80 pointed teeth. If a tooth is lost, a new one grows in its place. It feeds on fish, turtles, water birds, snakes, frogs, and small mammals.
The alligator swims by tucking its legs against its body and sweeping its tail from side to side. It is capable of sudden bursts of speed in the water and on land.
Active during warmer months, alligators may stay secluded underwater or in shoreline dens during colder months. If resting, they can stay underwater for an hour or even several hours. They tend to wander during droughts and mating season.
Scan the surface of a lake at night with a strong flashlight. A red glow is the light reflected from an alligator's eyes. A green or yellow glow indicates a frog or water spider.

American Crocodile The American crocodile is one of 13 different species of crocodiles in the world. Crocodiles are brownish-green, have a long, narrow skull, and pointed snout, and a streamlined body. The tail is used like a paddle and is very powerful. Even when its mouth is closed, all its teeth are visibvle. Crocodiles in Southwest Florida exist in a small colony in Estero Bay, and in the mangrove islands around Sanibel.

http://www.ecofloridamag.com/archived/alligators.htm
Alligators are here to be studied, watched, preserved, protected and respected as survivors of the dinosaur age.
Gators!
There was a time when reptiles, including dinosaurs, dominated the earth. Crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gharials) are the sole survivors from the ruling age of reptiles, dating back to the Mesozoic era. They still have long bodies, big mouths full of sharp teeth and huge tails. In their environment, they are the top-ranked predators in the food chain. Early Spanish explorers who encountered the large, lizard-like reptiles in the southeastern United States named them "el lagarto," meaning lizard. Later, the English settlers called them "allagarto," paving the way for today's term of "alligator." The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is found only in the southeastern part of the United States with the highest populations found in Florida and Louisiana a much smaller part of its former range, due in part to change in climate. Alligators can be found in a range of habitats, including marshland, swamps, rivers, lakes and ponds. Alligators are often referred to as "cold-blooded" animals, a literal term, as they cannot automatically control their body temperatures. Being cold-blooded actually is a survival tactic because they don't need to eat as much or as often as their warm-blooded counterparts.

alligators and other wildlife that are fed by people learn to associate people with wildlife and Birds. alligators are part of the Florida environment

Report People Who Feed Alligators
Q: I have a neighbor feeding gators in a pond by our house. What is the best way to report this, and who would be the best contact to call, while trying to avoid starting trouble in the 'hood? D. A: Uh-oh. You're right; it's not pleasant to stir up trouble in a neighborhood. After all, you have to live among these people. However, your neighbor is already stirring up trouble by feeding a local alligator. Wildlife biologists say most alligator attacks on people are done by alligators that have been fed by people. Alligators and other wildlife that are fed by people learn to associate people with food. Voila people mean food. And nobody wants a neighborhood alligator that thinks people = food. Feeding or harrassing alligators is also against Florida state law, punishable by up to $500 and/or 60 days in jail. (A couple people were arrested when they were caught in the act of feeding an alligator in June 2005.) So what can you do? If your neighbor is someone with whom you have good rapport, you could mention this to him or her if you think that will make the person stop feeding the alligator. Strange as it may seem, some people just don't get that feeding alligators is dangerous, stupid and illegal

Homosassa Springs wildlife State Park alligators.
http://www.citrusdirectory.com/hsswp/animals/alligator.html
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is the home of Alligators
Scientific Name: Alligator mississippiensis Also commonly known as: Mississippi alligator, Pike-headed alligator, "gator". Photos Below, Click Here. Alligators are found throughout the entire Southeastern United States including; Alabama, Arkansas, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. They usually occupy freshwater swamps and marshes but are also found in rivers, lakes and smaller bodies of water. Occasionally found in brackish water around mangrove swamps, alligators can tolerate a reasonable degree of salinity though the lack the buccal salt-secreting glands present in crocodiles. It was once common to see male alligators 5 to 6 meters in length, however, today it is rate to see on over 4.5 meters. Females are much smaller reaching an average length of only 3 meters. The alligator snout is broad with the edge of the upper jaw overlapping the teeth of the lower jaw. The juveniles are miniature versions of their parents having what is known as disruptive camouflage. They have bright yellow bands across a black background. As juveniles get older their black and yellow coloring fades to brown and green. Their eyes are silvery in color. Adults generally take one of two forms: long and thin or short and stocky. Alligator populations were dwindling up until the legal protection of the 1960's. Their belly skin produces a high quality leather, this led to increased hunting pressures early in the century especially in Louisiana and Florida. The species has recovered well thanks to properly controlled conservation and sustainable use programs. The populations have improved considerably and are now only considered to be threatened in some states by habitat destruction.
