Diagnosing and treating a dog for something that sounds as simple as "itchy skin" may actually be quite complex. In dogs, itchiness (or pruritus) may be manifested by licking, scratching, or rubbing the affected area. If the ears are pruritic (itchy), the dog may shake his head and/or scratch his ears. Anal pruritus may cause the dog to "scoot" his hindquarters along the rug in attempt to scratch the area under the tail. Not only are there many possible direct causes of pruritus, but there may be secondary problems which can cause the skin to be even more pruritic than the primary ones. In order to be successful in treating the dog's discomfort, the secondary problems must be addressed first. Only then can the underlying causes be adequately assessed.
The most common direct causes of skin pruritus (itchy skin) in dogs are:
  • allergies
  • skin surface irritants
  • bacterial infections
  • external parasites
Some examples of common secondary causes of pruritus are:
  • yeast infections of paws, ears, or skin folds; often secondary to moisture, to excessive skin secretions, or to airborne or food allergies.

Find out more about these food allergies and how to stay healthy.

KidsHealth Kids Staying Healthy Fabulous Food
Oh, nuts! They sure can cause you trouble if you're allergic to them - and a growing number of kids are these days. So what kind of nuts are we talking about? Peanuts, for one, though they aren't truly a nut. (They're a legume [say: leh -gyoom] like peas or lentils.) A person could also be allergic to nuts that grow on trees, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, and cashews. When you think of allergies , you might picture lots of sneezing and loads of runny noses. But unlike a mild allergy to spring flowers, a nut or peanut allergy can cause difficulty breathing and other very serious health problems. That's why it's very important for someone with a nut or peanut allergy to avoid eating nuts and peanuts , which can be tough because they're in lots of foods. Why Does the Body Go Nuts Over Nuts?
When someone has a food allergy , his or her body sort of misfires. Instead of treating a nut or peanut like any old food, the body reacts as if the nut or peanut is harmful. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces antibodies (special chemicals designed to fight infections) against that food.

163. Pets - ACAAI
However, people with allergies should be cautious in deciding what type of pet Allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be indicated for cat or dog allergies,
http://www.acaai.org/public/advice/pets.htm
Advice from Your Allergist...Pet Allergy More than 70 percent of U.S. households have a dog or cat. Pets provide companionship, security and a sense of comfort. Children often learn responsibility and lessons about life and death from pets. However, people with allergies should be cautious in deciding what type of pet they can safely bring into their home. Pet exposure may cause sneezing and wheezing.
An estimated 10 percent of the population may be allergic to animals. A higher rate of 20 to 30 percent of individuals with asthma have pet allergies. Pets can cause problems to allergic patients in several ways. Their dander, or skin flakes, as well as their saliva and urine, can cause an allergic reaction. The animal hair is not considered to be a very significant allergen. However, the hair or fur can collect pollen, dust, mold and other allergens. What are the most common pets?
The most common household pets are dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, rabbits, mice, gerbils, rats and guinea pigs. Larger animals such as horses, goats, cows, chickens, ducks and geese, even though kept outdoors, can also cause problems as pets. The number of pets in the United States is estimated at more than 100,000,000. This large number also increases the likelihood of accidental exposure to animals by the allergic patient when visiting homes, farms, etc.

    Allergies: How To Avoid Them
Are allergies a problem? Some medical statistics indicate that 1-in-7 Americans experienced the symptoms of an allergy in 1950. By 1970, approximately 1-in-5 reported having allergies. And by 1985, approximately 75 Million Americans, or 1-in-3, suffered from allergies.
    Nutritional Support for Allergies
Click this link for details on how allergies are caused, and how to combat allergies with nutrition. What is an allergy?
An allergy is a catch-all word for a wide variety of reactions to substances that the body determines to be foreign. Anything that it does not recognize as itself can be considered an allergen . When the body encounters a foreign substance, it reacts by making antibodies or releasing certain chemicals called histamines . When histamines and other substances are released into the system, they cause an inflammatory reaction we call an allergy What are the symptoms?
The inflammatory reaction affects the tissue and organs, mainly the skin, mucous membranes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms commonly produced include itching and watery eyes, runny and congested nose and sinuses, sneezing, respiratory symptoms, headache, skin reactions and rapid heart beat. Other symptoms may include fatigue, intestinal gas or pain, abdominal bloating and mood changes.

    Introduction
Lyme disease is an infection caused by the corkscrew-shaped bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi that are transmitted by the bite of deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and western black-legged ticks (Ixodes pacificus). The deer tick, which normally feeds on the white-footed mouse, the white-tailed deer, other mammals, and birds, is responsible for transmitting Lyme disease bacteria to humans in the northeastern and north-central United States. On the Pacific Coast, the bacteria are transmitted to humans by the western black-legged tick. Top of Page

    What is an allergy?
An allergy is a very common condition in which your immune system reacts to a substance that is normally harmless. The substance that causes the allergic reaction is called an allergen. About one in four people in the UK have an allergy at some point in their life. Allergies can affect anyone regardless of their race or sex. Some people have more severe allergic reactions than others. In extreme cases, an allergic reaction causes anaphylaxis, which can be fatal, but in most cases it just causes uncomfortable symptoms. The number of people with allergies is increasing. This is probably partly because the condition is recognised by doctors more often than before, but other factors which seem to be important include:
