144. Your Animal's Health -- With Dr. Wendell O. Belfield
There is a long list of causes of skin allergies in both the dog and the cat . All of these and more can cause skin allergies in your pets.
http://www.belfield.com/article6.html
July/August 1997
T he most perplexing and arduous condition to treat in most small animal practices is skin allergies. The professional approach to these problems is to treat the symptoms: the persistent scratching, inflamed skin, loss of hair, and (sometimes) bacterial infections. To accomplish this end, the practitioner will administer steroids, antibiotics, tranquilizers, and antihistamines. The administration of these drugs will usually give temporary relief; and prolonged use can create other more serious problems such as Cushing's Syndrome, Addison's Disease, liver and kidney disease.
There is a long list of causes of skin allergies in both the dog and the cat. First we must look at the diets of these animals. According to veterinary allergists, animal protein can be an allergen. Some of our pets are allergic to beef, some to chicken, turkey, and most to horse meat. The animal protein most seem to do well on is lamb. To determine the substances to which our pets are allergic, a series of allergy tests can be administered. Some patients when tested will test positive for all substances tested for. This is an indication that these animals are immunologically deficient, i.e., the animal has no defense against those specific agents or allergens.
Also in our pets' diets are chemical preservatives. Two of the most used are BHA and BHT for the preservation of fat. These two compounds can cause liver and kidney damage, yet for years these products were incorporated into baby foods. Many countries have banned their use and importation. BHA and BHT were on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list because there were no known negative effects to the body of humans and animals. In 1991, these two chemicals were removed from the "GRAS" list, but some pet food companies are still using them in their products.

Allergies
The symptoms are familiar to millions of Americans - runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes - but it's not from a cold or flu, it's allergies. Allergic diseases are among the most common causes of disability in the United States, affecting over 40 million Americans, as many as one in six, according to the National Allergy Bureau (NAB). When someone has an allergy, they're sensitive to substances that don't affect most people, for example, pollen, mold, medications, even certain foods. An allergic reaction is our immune system (Read about " The Immune System ") doing its job to protect us from foreign substances, but unfortunately it's a false alarm as most of these substances pose no real danger to us.
Allergy Symptoms
An allergy is an abnormal reaction to a normally harmless substance. While these substances, called allergens, don't bother most people, an allergic person's body will overreact when exposed to them, releasing chemicals that cause the classic allergy symptoms. Here are the most common:
  • sneezing
  • runny nose
  • stuffy nose
  • watery eyes
  • coughing
  • itchy eyes, nose or throat

    Allergies and Food Sensitivities
Written by Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D.
Center for the Study of Autism, Salem, Oregon
People with autism are more susceptible to allergies and food sensitivities than the average person; and this is likely due to their impaired immune system. I have provided a brief discussion of allergies and food sensitivities below. Allergies . An allergy is the body's overreaction to a foreign substance. When a substance causes the body's immune system to overreact, this substance is referred to as an 'allergen.' When an allergen, such as a plant pollen, is inhaled, it is identified by the body as an intruder. As a response, the body produces an antibody called 'immunoglobulin E,' or IgE, to destroy the intruder. The antibodies then attach themselves to mast cells which are located in tissues and basophils and are located in the blood stream. When the IgE also attaches to the intruder, the mast cells and basophils release histamine. Histamine causes swelling of the lining in the nose and causes extra mucus to form. Consequently, the person can suffer nasal itching and congestion, sneezing, and inflamed, irritated, and/or itching eyes. Due to one's immune system, some people are more sensitive than others to foreign substances. Food Sensitivities . There is growing evidence that many people with autism are sensitive to certain food products. The most common food products to which this sensitivity develops are grains (e.g., wheat, rye, oats) and dairy products (e.g., milk, cheese, whey). Other foods, which are often consumed during the spring and summer, are strawberries and citrus fruit. Food sensitivities are considered by many people as allergies in that one's immune system is overly reactive to these substances. Food sensitivities may be responsible for numerous physical and behavioral problems, such as headaches, stomachaches, feeling of nausea, bed-wetting, appearing 'spaced out,' stuttering, excessive whining and crying, sleeping problems, hyperactivity, aggression, sound sensitivity, temper tantrums, fatigue, depression, intestinal problems (i.e., gas, diarrhea, constipation), muscle aches in the legs, ear infections and possibly seizures.

Welcome to Y AMOA™ POWDER'S official website! You are no doubt here because you have been referred to us by a YAMOA POWDER user or a health practitioner, or because you have read an article about YAMOA. You might, on the other hand, have stumbled across us through a search engine, in which case you may not know what all the fuss is about.
YAMOA POWDER has been used in Ghana for many years to treat respiratory allergies. It is a natural product from the Funtumia Elastica gum tree, and when taken on a relatively short-term basis, can help with the symptoms of conditions such as, asthma hay fever bronchitis sinusitis and COPD , in many cases for the long term.
The intention of this site is to provide honest, objective information regarding YAMOA POWDER in both its forms - the traditional powder and vegetarian capsules. YAMOA POWDER is NOT a miracle herb, and it will NOT have the same results for everyone, although we wish it did. However, we are working with a continuing survey which will help us in the long term to determine who YAMOA POWDER is most effective for, and who it is least likely to help, so that when we have these results, you will be able to make an even more informed choice as to whether you think it may help you.
