FELINE ASTHMA
Humans aren't the only species that can suffer from asthma and allergies. If your cat is coughing, is wheezing, has shortness of breath, or seems to be constantly coughing up a nonexistent hairball, she could be suffering from feline asthma. The problem is more common than many cat owners know. Some owners may dismiss important telltale signs and assume their pet is trying to expel a hairball during a coughing episode. However, cats can get the same airway spasms that lead to acute constriction of breathing as human sufferers. Severely affected cats may even display extreme respiratory distress.
Symptoms Vary
An allergen or stress can trigger feline allergy symptoms, which may accompany or precede vomiting, sneezing, sniffling, or even wheezing like a human allergy sufferer. Symptoms can vary from cat to cat. "Cats can have several different signs, and the signs can be anything from coughing and wheezing with no other problems to severe respiratory distress or difficulty breathing, requiring oxygen therapy," explains Dr. Liz Rozanski, an assistant professor of emergency and critical care at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. "And symptoms can be anywhere in between. My own cat had one bout one summer and has never had another problem. That's not at all unheard of, but some other cats continue to have severe episodes, and it's not always easy to tell which group the cat is going to fit into."

WARNING!
Workers exposed to latex gloves and other products containing natural rubber latex may develop allergic reactions such as skin rashes; hives; nasal, eye, or sinus symptoms; asthma; and (rarely) shock. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) requests assistance in preventing allergic reactions to natural rubber latex* among workers who use gloves and other products containing latex. Latex gloves have proved effective in preventing transmission of many infectious diseases to health care workers. But for some workers, exposures to latex may result in skin rashes; hives; flushing; itching; nasal, eye, or sinus symptoms; asthma; and (rarely) shock. Reports of such allergic reactions to latex have increased in recent years especially among health care workers. At present, scientific data are incomplete regarding the natural history of latex allergy. Also, improvements are needed in methods used to measure proteins causing latex allergy. This Alert presents the existing data and describes six case reports of workers who developed latex allergy. The document also presents NIOSH recommendations for minimizing latex-related health problems in workers while protecting them from infectious materials. These recommendations include reducing exposures, using appropriate work practices, training and educating workers, monitoring symptoms, and substituting nonlatex products when appropriate.

Your eyes itch, your nose is running, you're sneezing, and you're covered in hives. The enemy known as allergies has struck again - and all you want to do is curl up into a ball of misery. There has to be something you can do to feel better. After all, doctors seem to have a cure for everything, right? Not for allergies. There are, however, things that you can do to relieve allergy symptoms or avoid getting the symptoms, even though you can't actually get rid of the allergies themselves. What Are Allergies?
Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people. When you're allergic to something, your immune system mistakenly believes that this substance is harmful to your body. (Substances that cause allergic reactions, such as certain foods, dust, plant pollen, or medicines, are known as allergens .) In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen. Those antibodies then cause certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream, one of which is histamine (pronounced: his -tuh-meen). The histamine then acts on a person's eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract and causes the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Future exposure to that same allergen will trigger this antibody response again. This means that every time you come into contact with that allergen, you'll have an allergic reaction.

Allergic Disease, Allergic Disorders, Allergic Illness Viennese paediatrician Baron Clemens von Pirquet coined the term "allergy" (from the Greek "allos" meaning changed or altered state and "ergon" meaning reaction or reactivity) in 1906 [ ]. Von Pirquet used the term to describe an altered reaction he had observed in patients, which he put down to the influence of external factors, an allergen , on the immune system. Allergies are hypersensitivity reactions of the immune system to specific substances called allergens (such as pollen stings drugs , or food ) that, in most people, result in no

An allergy refers to a misguided reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. It is misguided because these foreign substances are usually harmless and remain so to non- allergic people. Allergy-producing substances are called "allergens." Examples of allergens include pollens, dust mite, molds, danders, and foods. To understand the language of allergy it is important to remember that allergens are substances that are foreign to the body and can cause an allergic reaction in certain people. From: NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 15 No. 4, July - August 1998, p. 100
Allergies today are more common than ever beforeone in five children now shows some degree of allergy by age 20. The incidence of allergies has increased tenfold over the past 20 years. This is partly due to increased exposure to known allergens (allergy-causing substances). It is also because physicians and allergy sufferers are more likely to recognize that certain symptoms or illnesses are caused by allergies (Lawrence 1994). Changes in the human diet from the days of hunter-gatherers eating seasonal foods to the year-round availability of most foods has, surprisingly, reduced the number of foods in a typical diet from around 200 to just about 20. Narrowing food choices in this manner increases exposure to these foods and predisposes people to food allergies. The earlier and more often a food is ingested, the greater likelihood it has of becoming an allergen. Babies tend to be most allergic to the foods they have been offered first. While a baby is exclusively breastfed, he is only exposed to the foods his mother eats and secretes in her milk, so his exposure to potential allergens is minimized.

My Family Has Food Allergies. How Does This Affect Breastfeeding?
Substances in your breast milk coat your baby's intestines, which prevents microscopic food particles from "leaking" through into your baby's bloodstream. When they do pass into the blood (something that is more frequent in an artificially fed baby), these food particles may be treated as foreign substances by his white blood cells, which attack them, and can cause painfully unhealthy allergic reactions, such as diarrhea, sore bottoms, runny noses and eyes, rashes and eczema, or a crying, sleepless baby.

Allergy Alert
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-613

If you're sneezing a lot in your yard, check to see if you have any of these allergy-causing culprits.
Fall means cooler temperatures, more abundant rainfall, fewer pests and gorgeous leaf colors; on the other hand, fall is a time when the air is filled with all sorts of things that cause allergies. Major culprits are pollen, mold spores and, if rainfall has been sparse, dust. Master gardener Paul James shares the reasons certain plants cause allergic reactions as well as some natural methods of allergy control:
  • Only male plants produce pollen, which means that only male plants can produce the symptoms associated with pollen allergies. It's not always easy to identify male and female plants, and in many cases there's no real way of knowing what sex your plant/tree is, since gender is rarely indicated on nursery tags. To further complicate the matter, you can't always tell the sex of a plant just by looking. Here are a few general guidelines to help you sort it out:
  • Within the world of gardening there are male plants, female plants and plants that are both male and female.
