Allergies to Pets
Whim Whams Illustration Studio Being a pet owner is never easy. While pets bring us joy and companionship on a daily basis, they also require training, veterinary care, time, love, attention, and even tolerance. Tolerance is especially necessary when a pet owner is allergic to his or her companion animal. Studies show that approximately 15% of the population is allergic to dogs or cats. An estimated one-third of Americans who are allergic to cats (about two million people) live with at least one cat in their household anyway. In a study of 341 adults who were allergic to cats or dogs and had been advised by their physicians to give up their pets, only one out of five did. What's more, 122 of them obtained another pet after a previous one had died. It's clear the benefits of pet companionship outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies for many owners. Living comfortably with a companion animal despite being allergic to him requires a good understanding of the allergic condition and an adherence to a few rules. Welcome to the Herb Palace!
When choosing between modern Western medicine, and alternative and complementary medicines, it is pretty clear that very often synthetic remedies made of chemicals not only fail to cure diseases, but often cause more adverse side effects than the ailments they aim to relieve. Here at the Herb Palace, we show you the benefits of herbal medicine by taking you through the history of traditional Chinese herbal medicine and Indian ayurvedic medicines. And then we look at common contemporary health problems, and then show you some of the exotic herbs used to treat or cure these health problems and their properties. We also share with you recent scientific case studies using these medicinal herbs or herbal remedies. Finally, we offer you health solutions using these herbal supplements. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4 billion people, 80% of the world's population, presently use herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care. Herbal medicine is a major component in all indigenous people's traditional medicine and a common element in Ayurvedic, homeopathic, naturopathic, traditional oriental, and Native American Indian medicine. The WHO notes that from 119 plant-derived pharmaceutical medicines, about 74% are used in modern medicine in ways that correlated directly with their traditional uses as plant medicines by native cultures. Major pharmaceutical companies are currently conducting extensive research on plant materials gathered from the rain forests and other places for their potential medicinal value.

How Your Immune System Works
by Marshall Brain Table of Contents Introduction to How Your Immune System Works Seeing Your Immune System Basics of the Immune System Viral or Bacterial Infection Components of the Immune System Lymph System Thymus Antibodies Complement System White Blood Cells Leukocytes Different Roles T Cells Vaccinations AIDS How Antibiotics Work Immune System Mistakes Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system . It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses , toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body. To understand the power of the immune system, all that you have to do is look at what happens to anything once it dies. That sounds gross, but it does show you something very important about your immune system. When something dies, its immune system (along with everything else) shuts down. In a matter of hours, the body is invaded by all sorts of bacteria, microbes, parasites... None of these things are able to get in when your immune system is working, but the moment your immune system stops the door is wide open. Once you die it only takes a few weeks for these organisms to completely dismantle your body and carry it away, until all that's left is a skeleton. Obviously your immune system is doing something amazing to keep all of that dismantling from happening when you are alive.

Food Allergies:
When Food Becomes the Enemy
By Ray Formanek Jr. Imagine what it would be like if eating a peanut butter sandwich or some shrimp, or drinking a tall glass of milk left you vomiting, gasping for breath, and furiously scratching a fresh crop of hives. For some people with food allergies, that's reality. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the immune system. While many people often have gas, bloating or another unpleasant reaction to something they eat, this is not an allergic response. Such a reaction is thought to not involve the immune system and is called "food intolerance." Only about 1.5 percent of adults and up to 6 percent of children younger than 3 years in the United Statesabout 4 million peoplehave a true food allergy, according to researchers who have examined the prevalence of food allergies.

DOES YOUR DOG HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend.
West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months. Dog food allergies
Food Allergies?
After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile.
I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

    Allergies (Food)
Hello, I am wondering which foods, if any, contain antihistamine. I am allergic to ragweed pollen. Sniff!! Sniff!!
The foods we consume do not contain antihistamine. FYI, Antihistamines are prescriptions you can take to interrupt your body's production of histamines in response to allergens in the environment. However, diet can still play an important role in controlling allergic reactions. A healthy, balanced diet that follows the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid is the first key to defending your body against allergic reactions. A healthy body is more resistant to attack, whereas stress, poor diet, insufficient sleep, emotional trauma, and infection can predispose your body to allergic reactions. More specifically, vitamin C and vitamin E can help protect your body. Vitamin C will boost your immune system and is found in citrus foods such as oranges, grapefruit, orange juice, grapefruit juice, green peppers and many beverages. Vitamin C acts similar to an antihistamine. Vitamin E is found in plant oils and green, leafy vegetables. With allergies in mind, the best diet to follow is one with plenty of carbohydrates and fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully the next frost will bring you relief from your allergies!

Come close, little ones, and hear our bedtime tale . . . Once upon a time, there was a woman. In the fall, she loved to go outside and feel the wind. In the winter, she loved to go outside and play in the snow. And in the spring, she would go outside, but her throat would itch, her eyes would get puffy, her nose would run, her sinuses would clog, and she'd get nasal drip. So she locked herself up in her house, and never came out again. The moral of the story: hay fever bites. Living with hay fever can be extremely difficult - when you're having trouble doing something as simple as breathing , you know that you're in for a long spring and summer. Yet most of us don't live anywhere near a farm . . . so where does the hay fever come from? It has often been noted (by people who like to note things) that hay fever is not a fever at all, nor does it have anything to do with hay. Hay fever, a.k.a. rose fever, is medically designated as "
