Historical setting
In geography, the fertile coastal plain of North Africa , especially west of Tunis , is often termed the Maghrib Modern Algeria is mainly Arabic-speaking, but a large minority still speak the indigenous Berber language, surviving from Neolithic times. The most significant forces in the country's history have been the spread of Islam , Arabization, Ottoman and French colonization , and the struggle for independence. North Africa served as a transit region for peoples moving toward Europe or the Middle East . Thus, the region's inhabitants have been influenced by populations from other areas. Out of this mix developed the

Algeria - History
In 1830 Algeria became a French colony. 1962 Algeria achieved independence from France after eight years of guerrilla warfare in which one million Algerians died. A brief power struggle followed between moderates and militants ended when Colonel Boumedienne lead the Arme de Liberation to victory. Ben Bella was elected prime minister promising a "revolutionary Arab-Islamic state based on the principles of socialism and collective leadership within Algeria and anti-imperialism abroad. These ideals were quickly put in to practice by landless peasants as they moved onto the land vacated by the French and established cooperative farms to be administered by peasant councils. Nationalisation of major industries proceeded. However the redistribution of land was limited to that which had been French owned, resulting in large estates still owned by rich Algerians. The call for liberation of women particularly frightened these conservative landowners. In 1963 and 1964 army revolts broke out centred on the slogan "Islam is not compatible with socialism". The people were disenchanted with civil disorder and economic stagnation after the sacrifice of an entire generation impatient for progress and prosperity.

Geography

Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. In the north the mountain range - the Saharan Tell - is roughly parallel with the Mediterranean coast and is disrupted by valleys and plateaux. To the south of the Saharan Tell is the Saharan Atlas range which roughly defines the divide between arable land to the north and the southern desert. The many important Roman ruins in Algeria are in excellent condition due to the dryness of the desert. TOP

ALGERIA BRIEF HISTORY
HISTORY:
The present borders of Algeria as well as tunisia and Libya were determined when the region became part of the Ottoman Empire, with each of the countries being an administrative subdivision. The coming of the Ottoman Empire lead to the Spanish losing the coastal strip which they had held. It subsequently became a pirate base for attacking European fleets. The French launched a military attack in 1830 and having obtained a foothold in North Africa, held on and expanded it. Algeria achieved independence in 1962, despite opposition from many French quarters. The victorious FLN (Front de Libération Nationale) Front Islamique du Salut (FIS, Islamic Salvation Front) whose growing support have since changed the face of Algerian politics. In May the following year, the Government was forced to resign by a FIS-led general strike. Only decisive action by President Chadli, backed by the security forces, prevented an outright FIS takeover. Nonetheless, the Government persevered with its democratisation programme, holding general elections as scheduled in January 1992, which resulted in a comprehen-sive victory for the FIS, but was followed by the military's decision to annul the result. The country has since been governed under a state of emergency. Against this background, at the end of June 1992, the State President Mohamed Boudiaf was assassinated. The last 12 months have since seen a stand-off between the Government and the Islamic opposition, as the military have maintained tight control over the security situation.

Algerian poll under cloud only one candidate left
April 15, 1999

Web posted at: 4:16 a.m. EDT (0816 GMT)
ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) Polling stations have opened Thursday in Algeria's presidential elections, where only one candidate is left in a field of seven after the shocking withdrawal of his opponents. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who emerged from nearly two decades of silence to run, is said to have the support of Algeria's powerful military and the resignations from the presidential race by his six opponents came amid allegations that fraud in early voting was already under way. But Bouteflika, 63, appeared unperturbed saying it was his destiny to upset others. "I'm a nonconformist politician. I'm a revolutionary," he said Wednesday. The surprise developments on the eve of the election were a blow to hopes that the voting would help mend fractures in a nation caught up in a cycle of violence since 1992, the start of an Islamic insurgency. Some 75,000 people have been killed.
