International Vegetarian Union (IVU) Algerian Green Beans with Almonds
Karen Kolling, California, USA - kolling@src.DEC.COM
This is a variation on an Algerian recipe from Rose Dosti's Middle Eastern Cooking.
Since when is North Africa in the Middle East?
You may well ask. (serves 4)
  • 1 lb fresh green beans 4 cups water, salted 3 Tbsp peanut oil 1 clove garlic, mashed 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/4 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp ground cloves 1 Tbsp slivered almonds
(1) Clean and trim green beans.
Simmer in lightly salted water until just tender, about 30-45 minutes.
Drain and put in serving dish. (2) Put remaining ingredients (except almonds) in a saucepan over medium heat and cook for two minutes, stirring constantly.
Add the almonds and stir briefly to coat. (3) Pour the oil mixture over the green beans and toss gently until beans are thoroughly coated. Serve warm. NOTES Canned green beans are not an acceptable substitute in this recipe.
Powdered garlic is probably OK. RATING Difficulty: easy.
Time: 10 minutes preparation, 50 minutes cooking.
Precision: approximate measurement OK.

Berbers , who still represent a significant minority. Algeria has been occupied many times during its history by - Phoenicians and Romans among others -
but the Arab invasions of the 8th and 11th centuries A.D. had the greatest cultural impact.
In 1492 Moors and Jews expelled from Spain settled in Algeria. Between 1518 and 1830 Algeria was an integral part of the Ottoman Empire.
Moslems were killed before independence was declared on July 5, 1962. Later that year the Algerian provisional government transferred authority to the Political Bureau of the FLN, the National Constituent Assembly was elected from a list of FLN candidates, and a republic was proclaimed with Ahmed Ben Bella, one of the original leaders of the FLN, as president. Nearly one million French and other Europeans (pieds noirs, or black feet) left the country when the French army withdrew.
During the 1960s and 1970s Algeria went through a difficult period of adjustment and change, emerging as a staunch socialist state: the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria. Houari Boumedienne, who became president after a 1965 coup, died in December 1978.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s the protracted struggle in Western Sahara

    Inquiry into Algerian riots
ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) An inquiry into rioting in the Berber region in which 41 people have died will be open and transparent, Algeria's interior minister has pledged. Noureddine Zerhouni told CNN that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced an investigation into the clashes between youths and security forces in Kabyle, in northeastern Algeria, sparked by the death of a student in police custody. ALSO Algeria government acts after riots Official Algerian figures record that 40 civilians and one gendarme were killed and that a total of 484 civilians and 388 police and gendarmes were injured. Zerhouni added that the situation in the region had "highly improved" since the announcement. On Saturday alone, 29 people were reported to have been killed and new clashes erupted on Monday leading to the death of a young protester in Haizer, east of Algiers. Eight other protesters died of wounds sustained in earlier clashes in nearby Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) east of Algiers, security forces said.

ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) Citing fraud, six candidates in Algeria's presidential elections said Wednesday they had withdrawn from the race just a day before the vote was to take place. "We have decided to collectively withdraw from the presidential elections and will not recognize the legitimacy of its outcome," the six said in a statement after outgoing President Liamine Zeroual refused to meet with them to discuss their complaints. Only Abdelaziz Bouteflika widely believed to have the support of Algeria's military remains in the race. The six former candidates said the election has been rigged in favor of Bouteflika with early voting by police, soldiers and firefighters. The group wanted those votes declared void.

Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Algeria or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? ALGIERS, Algeria (Reuters) The decomposed bodies of five Algerians who got lost in the Sahara desert more than two weeks ago have been found, a government newspaper said on Wednesday. El Moudjahid newspaper, quoting local authorities, said the Algerians abandoned their four-wheel drive vehicle when it broke down in the Tanezrouft desert. They died after running out of water in an apparent attempt to reach a town. People often go missing in the vast desert, known for its archeological sites and banditry.Last month 18 Algerians were found after spending a week in the desert. Thirty two European holidaymakers were kidnapped by armed Islamic rebels while travelling in the Sahara desert earlier this year. Fourteen were released in August in neighbouring Mali after six months in captivity. Another group of 17 tourists were freed in May. One hostage died of heatstroke.
