190. Introduction To Raï Music Of Algeria
Explores the meaning of Rai and its significance to algerian culture. Contains links and a few sound samples.
http://menic.utexas.edu/menic/rai/
The following is adopted from by Marc Schade-Poulsen)
Raï (pronounced "rye") literally means "a way of seeing," "an opinion," "a point of view," "advice," but also "an aim," "a plan" and even "a thought," "a judgment," "a will." In Orania it is widely said that in the past people went to a shikh , a poet of malhun But the word also appears as a stopgap expression in a number of songs of a more popular kind, as one finds " aman, aman " in Turkish songs, " ya lil, ya lil " in Egyptian songs, and " dan dani " in the poetry of the shikhs (all of these expressions are also found in raï), or the "oh no, oh no" or "yeah, yeah" of rock and blues lyrics. Raï's rhythmic and tonal universe originates from western Algeria, with its center of gravity lying between Relizane, Saida, Sidi Bel Abbès, Oujda (in Morocco), and Oran. The emergence of raï is generally associated with the migration into the cities of western Algeria, starting with the world depression in the 1930s. Other sources, however, mention elements which are associated with the raï music of today, such as the "repetitive" musical form, improper forms of expression, women entertaining men, and games of competition, indicating that raï as a genre goes much further back in history.

Deadly quake hits Algeria

Major quakes
ALGIERS, Algeria Algeria continued to be hit by strong aftershocks Wednesday, a week after a devastating earthquake killed about 2,200 people and injured 9,000. The ground shook again Wednesday morning following a stronger tremor Tuesday evening that was believed to have killed at least three people and injured more than 180. There were no reported injuries from Wednesday's quake. "People were having breakfast and then all of a sudden everything shook, the plates, the glasses, the cutlery. I heard one person say 'not again,'" said a Reuters correspondent in the capital Algiers. The new quakes have put further pressure on hospitals and other essential services along the Mediterranean coast of the northern African country following the May 21 disaster. Many international rescue teams pulled out on Monday and Tuesday after ending their search for survivors, leaving only aid and health workers to recover bodies and care for the estimated 20,000 people who were left homeless.

RELATED STORIES, SITES
April 15, 1999 Web posted at: 9:03 p.m. EDT (0103 GMT) ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) Algerians went to the polls in relatively low numbers Thursday in a presidential election marred by the last-minute withdrawal of all but one candidate. The Interior Ministry said voter turnout was 65 percent, moderately lower than the 75 percent who cast ballots in the last presidential election in 1995. Final results were expected Friday. The election was hailed as a chance for real democracy in Algeria, a nation torn by a rebel Islamist insurgency that has claimed more than 70,000 lives since 1992. Those hopes were wrecked when six of the seven candidates for president withdrew from the race Wednesday, after current President Liamine Zeroual refused to meet them to discuss allegations of widespread fraud.

Algerians held in UK terror swoop
Story Tools LONDON, England Ten Algerian men have been arrested under Britain's anti-terror laws, police say. Six were held in London and four in Manchester in co-ordinated dawn raids. A London police spokesman said: "This operation is part of our extensive and on-going inquiries into terrorism." Six men were held in north, east and south-east London by officers from Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Branch. The detained men were all believed to be aged in their 30s. They were held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of being involved in the "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism." All six were taken to a police station in central London and remain in custody. In Manchester a 32-year-old man was also held under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The operation was carried out by Greater Manchester Police at the request of the Anti-Terrorist Branch. He will be transferred to London for questioning.
