    Parental Involvement
Parents teach their children all the time. They teach language to their infants, and they teach their young children not to talk to strangers. They read to their sons and daughters and, in the process, help them learn how to read and write. They even teach their children how to count and use basic arithmetic facts. But as their sons and daughters reach middle school and high school, many parents are not sure how to proceed with mathematics. Many are intimidated by their own perceived weakness in the subject. Yet most parents want to help their sons and daughters succeed in mathematics so that they may acquire the skills necessary to get a good job.

The Algebra Helper software will literally help you work on your own algebra problems at your own pace. By the time you're done with your homework, you can show that teacher (and if you're nice - your classmates too) how it's done. It seems like algebra homework can take forever. It seems like all you do is sit there and stare at the equations hoping that it will just suddenly sink in. And yet…when you're done staring at the homework, you still probably have a ton of other homework to do. You're not dumb. Everyone at one point has hoped for help with algebra that doesn't involved parents, teachers or tutorials. They can help (well, maybe not always the parents), but often you're still left confused and unsure of how to solve the equations that you were assigned.

The author points out that, although students should have the experience of entering the program commands themselves, an alternative approach is for the teacher to write the relevant on one calculator and then distribute it to students' calculators by using their linking capabilities. The paper relates that teachers can adapt the material for use with Texas Instruments (TI), Casio, Hewlett-Packard and Sharp graphing calculators. From the Paper:

Algebra, once a topic relegated to high school, is now one of the top priorities for elementary and middle school. Teachers learn what algebraic concepts to teach and how to teach them. Lessons build on instruction teachers already provide in arithmetic, and each includes an overview, vocabulary used, time needed, materials required, and a classroom vignette. Samples of student work help teachers plan and prepare.

    http://www.algebralab.org/
Welcome to AlgebraLAB , an online learning environment that focuses on topics and skills from high school mathematics that students must be able to draw upon in their introductory science courses. Since math is the language of science, science courses are often where students first realize “Oh, so this is why we learned that in algebra …”
In many cases students often discover that it is one or more math skills that initially block their ability to understand and internalize new science concepts. In science classes students must learn how to recognize when particular mathematics procedures are applicable so that they can select from their "mathematics toolboxes" the correct methods needed to solve new problems. And to make matters worse, these new problems are often "word problems" that require not only an ultimate solution but an understanding of how to interpret givens, relate cause-and-effect, and set up any initial conditional equations.
We have used successful research-based design models to drive the project’s design and implementation. AlgebraLAB focuses on building the connections between science and the basic mathematics required for its understanding by means of:

UIC Program Led by Dr. Naomi Fisher
The Algebra Initiative of the Chicago Public Schools is a program to prepare CPS teachers in elementary and middle grade schools to teach a rigorous algebra course to qualified 8th grade students. Three universities, DePaul University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, are collaborating with CPS in offering inservice programs in the academic year to CPS teachers. Teachers successfully completing one of the university programs are eligible to take the joint qualifying exam, offered at the conclusion of the programs, to become CPS-qualified to teach algebra in the 8th grade.
The Algebra Initiative program at UIC is a two-semester sequence given in the fall and spring semesters of the 2005-06 academic year. Teachers who would like to prepare for teaching algebra in the 8th grade and teachers of lower grades, who are interested in preparing their students to qualify for taking algebra in the 8th grade, are encouraged to participate in the Algebra Initiative. Generous tuition subsidies are available from CSMI.

Learning about Algebra tiles: Activities for teachers
Algebra tiles provide a useful way to introduce operations on polynomials to students of all ages. The following can be used both as a self guided tour of teaching with algebra tiles, and as a set of activities for use with students. Examples of instructions to students are indented. The remainder of the text is addressed directly to the reader who is assumed to be a teacher.
    Getting Started
attached sheets . The commercial sets are nice and sturdy, but tempt students to negative numbers too quickly and cost too much to give away a set to every kid. The sheets are not as sturdy, but can be made available to kids to take home and delay the idea of negatives until the teacher is ready to cope with it. You may also have a commercial set with other colours for a second variable, and some more squarish rectangles. Hide them for the moment. The third sheet in the cutout set provided fulfills the same functions, so ignore it for the moment, too.
    Naming
I call the small squares "nameless ones." This captures two important ideas: They aren't named when we talk about polynomials, and their value is 1. The reason for the name isn't something you'd tell kids on the first day, but having reasonable names for things makes the going easier later on.
