In our meager attempt to help Hurricane Katrina survivors, all students who attend schools in Lousiana, Mississippi, and Alabama will be provided a free 1 year student license for LiveMath Maker and MathEQ Expression Editor. We hope this will help these students with their studies during the recovery efforts - our hearts are with you. Many of the computer algebra products available today are based upon writing a strict syntax language of programming commands and structures. Quite often, one spends more time fighting with the syntax and the requirements of the programming code than actually doing the math

History of Ganit (Mathematics)
Introduction
Ganit (Mathematics) has been considered a very important subject since ancient times. We find very elaborate proof of this in Vedah (which were compiled around 6000 BC). The concept of division, addition et-cetera was used even that time. Concepts of zero and infinite were there. We also find roots of algebra in Vedah. When Indian Beez Ganit reached Arab, they called it Algebra. Algebra was name of the Arabic book that described Indian concepts. This knowledge reached to Europe from there. And thus ancient Indian Beez Ganit is currently referred to as Algebra.

176. Advanced Course On Group Actions
An introduction to a conjecture due to P. Baum and A. Connes that there is a natural isomorphism between the equivariant Khomology of the classifying space EG for proper G-actions and the topological K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra of the group G. Centre de Recerca Matem tica, Universitat Aut²noma de Barcelona, Spain; 1822 September 2001.

Advanced course on group actions Schedule List of Participants Dates: September 18 to September 22, 2001 Place: Centre de Recerca Matemàtica
Campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Bellaterra, Spain Speakers: Guido Mislin (ETH Zürich)
Equivariant K-homology of the classifying space for proper actions Alain Valette (Université de Neuchâtel)
Topological K-theory of group C*-algebras Summary: Mislin will discuss the construction and the topological properties of EG. In particular, results will be presented concerning the (minimal) dimension of its G-homotopy type. An outline will be given of the following topics: Bredon cohomology and Mackey functors; equivariant homology via spectra over orbit categories; assembly maps; equivariant AtiyahHirzebruch spectral sequence; equivariant Chern character; computations involving groups of finite vcd, groups of rational cohomological dimension one and some other special classes of groups; the relationship of the BaumConnes Conjecture with other conjectures (Idempotent Conjecture, Zero-Divisor Conjecture, Atiyah Conjecture, Novikov Conjecture, GromovLawson Conjecture, Bass Conjecture). Valette will describe the right-hand side of the conjectured isomorphism (topological K-theory for C*-algebras) and will give the analyst's point of view on the left-hand side (analytical description of K-homology) and on the assembly map. The generalization with coefficients of the conjecture will be described, having better stability properties under various group constructions. Positive and negative results will be stated. The two series of lectures will proceed in parallel (7.5 hours each).
