Lyryx develops online learning and assessment tools intended to support both instructors in their teaching, and students in their learning.
      For instructors:
One of our main goal is to free some valuable time for instructors. We hope that by helping them with marking, they can for example refocus their efforts to attend student needs more effectively.
First instructors send us a short email with basic information so we can setup their course. Then we remain available 24/7 for individual support, including offering guidance in choosing the number and weighting of labs/quizzes appropriate for their course, but also with specific problems and setting start and due dates for each lab or quiz. We believe our system is simple enough that an instructor can set labs for their entire course in a matter of less than an hour. Then all the marking is done by us, and marks can be collected and labs can be viewed at any time! For students:
As important for us is to help students in their learning. This is the reason that our direction is toward personalized feedback on their work very much in the spirit of a tutor. Our unique implementation of Labs , which students can try as often as desired prior to a due date set by the instructor, has been extremely well received by both students and educators. As opposed to quizzes (or multiple choice questions) which are used to assess student knowledge, these labs are designed to guide student learning from the beginning, very much in the spirit of homework.

THE ALGEBRA CONSPIRACY What The Educational Establishment Doesn't Want You To Hear!
More and more of our secondary school students are being required to take two or three years of college-prep mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, etc.) to qualify for a high school diploma. The problem is that many of these students cannot perform elementary arithmetic with common fractions, decimal fractions and percents, so any attempt to teach them Algebra is doomed to failure. In addition, many other students are able to pass these required math classes, but plan to enter jobs and professions where knowledge of college-prep mathematics is irrelevant such as teaching English or becoming a social worker, carpenter, journalist, etc. They are being forced to spend years studying material they will never use in their adult life.
All over the United States, many, many students are sitting in Algebra and Geometry classes that they may not want, that they may not need to fulfill requirements for their planned future employment, or that they may not be academically equipped to handle. In many school districts, this is creating an academic nightmare, as more and more

    Introduction
The use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics has been explored by most educators for some time now. Technology in the mathematics classroom has undoubtedly grown as user-friendly technologies have been developed to assist the instructor in tracking multiple student progress. Through the use of technology, instructors are now able to provide feedback and guidance on an individual basis, monitor student progress, link students to other related learning resources, and provide an interactive learning experience. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some of the technologies available for the delivery of mathematics courses online. The demonstrations will focus on the use of a WebCT platform in the teaching and assessing of college students in an Intermediate Algebra online course.
    Description of Course
The online sections of the course are taught completely online with a maximum of eighteen students per class. The students in the class log onto a WebCT platform where the course has been developed. The home page of the course consists of nine different icons labeled as Start Here, Pre-Class Info, Syllabus, Course Content, Study Tools, Communication, University Resources, Evaluations, and Search. The students are responsible to log on at least once a day just as they would be responsible to attend a live course everyday.

Valencia Students Improve Performance and Achievement with PLATO Interactive Mathematics for Distance Learning and Self-Paced Instruction Overview
    • On the Osceola and West Campuses, students have benefited from the selfpaced nature of the courses taught using PLATO Interactive Mathematics. On the East Campus, passing rates in Intermediate Algebra and subsequent College Algebra courses have been higher for students who have taken the online PLATO Interactive Mathematics course.
Valencia Community College’s faculty and staff put their energies into a “learning-centered” philosophy that emphasizes individual student success. In an ongoing effort to be responsive to the business community, Valencia builds relationships with high schools, universities, and corporate partners to strengthen academic scholarship and economic development. Valencia Community College (VCC) implemented PLATO Interactive Mathematics in 1995 to address issues of student retention and achievement and to increase the success rate in developmental studies programs. The college also wanted to offer an alternative method to the traditional classroom setting. Since then, the college has seen tremendous results in student achievement and passing rates. Providing Self-Paced Instruction To Improve Achievement
At VCC’s Osceola and West Campuses, PLATO Interactive Mathematics provides students with a technology alternative to traditional classroom learning. Students can enroll in Prealgebra, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra courses using the PLATO Learning courseware as the primary source of curriculum.
