All internet courses are taught in a self-paced, mastery format. Students are required to attend a mandatory orientation meeting at the beginning of the semester. Regular on-campus meetings scheduled throughout the semester provide the opportunity for individual consultation with the instructor, small group discussions, problem-solving sessions, demonstrations, and for students to take required exams and tests. Students must attend a minimum number of the regularly scheduled semester meetings and must take all required exams and tests. Students progress through the courses at their own pace but must complete the course by the final class meeting. The meeting dates, times, and requirements will be explained at the orientation sessions and posted on instructors' Web pages.

Taking courses "at a distance" can open the doors of SMCC's math courses to those who would not normally have access to the course offerings. For example, geography, time constraints, or physical barriers might be standing in the way of taking a campus based course. However, taking online courses is not for the faint of heart. To help ensure you reach your goals please consider the following: Have you checked with an advisor? It is very important that you talk with a knowledgeable advisor before you begin any course of study. You want to be sure that what you do will actually be moving you towards your goal.
Do you have the self-discipline to work independently ? The self-paced, independent mode of delivery for these courses is a two-edged sword. It's wonderful to have control of the pace and sequence of the lessons but it is also very easy to fall into procrastination. Successful completion requires a disciplined, consistent effort. Take this self test to assess your readiness to take online classes.

Math 120, 122, 123 Online Back to math 120, 122, 123 online Some advice for online algebra students from former students my advise would be for a student taking this online math class to first off, get a math buddy...preferably someone who has already taken algebra. sometimes i had a question or couldnt figure out something simply based on the examples in the book and i wouldnt know what to do. also, do your work on time, or even better, get it all done at the beginning of the semester so you dont have to worry about cramming at the end...wish i did that. then if you have any questions, you have pleanty of time to either contact professor innerst, or ask a friend. i think thats about it, good luck!
-Anonymous This class requires self discipline. Spend time reading and understanding each example in the beginning of a section before attempting the homework. I did almost every odd question in each section. This was time consuming, but the constant repitition really reinforces the concept. Stay on a strict schedule and budget at least 10 hrs. per week for Math 122/123 or 15 hours per week for Math 120 . Understand every type of problem on the practice tests. This is an invaluable tool. Good luck!
-Anonymous I believe that setting time aside for myself every week helped. I set aside usually about three hours a week in order to get my homework done. You don't need to do three hours all at once, you can do an hour here and half an hour there, whichever suits your schedule more. This is what I think helped me the most.

What class to take if you have been out of school for quite some time.
If you have been out of school for many years, you may want to start out at the Basic Math/Pre Algebra level. It is important to not start too high in math since if you don't have the basics, math just becomes frustrating. After the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra should be taken. If you are taking a test such as the GRE or ELM, take the Test Prep Course after Elementary Algebra. It contains Intermediate Algebra, Data Interpretation and Geometry. This is the course that covers everything on tests such as the GRE and ELM. If you feel like you can start higher then the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course, go to the following address and scroll down a little until you see the menu for the lessons: This is the syllabus for the Basic Math/Pre Algebra courses. If you recognize all the topics listed, you should sign up for the Elementary Algebra. If you think there are several topics from the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course that you are not familiar with, then take the Basic Math/Pre Algebra Course.

Christine Unsolicited Student Comments Below is a recent article written and published at Suite101.com by a satisfied student at Math Courses Online. Rx for College Algebra Adults contemplating returning to college generally perceive two looming barriers to overcome: financing their education and passing college algebraand not necessarily in that order. If you should do poorly in a course, check with the Registrar of your college. There is usually an option to repeat a course once, called "duplication" that allows you to replace the grade you received from the first time you take a course with the grade you receive the second time. This procedure is generally limited to the second time you take a course, so be prepared. Taking an online course, active participation in a study group and hiring a good tutor can help you improve your grade, pass a course, and raise your grade point average. Self-efficacy is a strong indicator of how well you do in a course. Take action to promote your self-confidence and sense of preparation.
