The math archive (12/97)
The math archive was introduced on Dec 1 1997 with the following announcement: We are introducing the math archive . The idea is to facilitate growth to areas of mathematics not covered by the current archive structure. The math archive has the same features as the current archives (searching, subscribing, web downloading and so on) with one important addition: Authors must include a Subj-class header, chosen from a canonical list. This is most easily done with a select menu for web submission , but the header can alternatively be included in e-mail submissions; see our abstract preparation help . You may subscribe to any subset of classifications; see our math subscription help . In this sense, each subject class functions as a new archive. This also makes it very easy to expand the archive by adding new subject classifications. Constructive comments are solicited concerning the proper subject classes. (See below

Section 1: General Algebra and Discrete Mathematics
The general framework for the research activities of the Arbeitsgruppe is established by the study of general mathematical structures in the field of algebra and discrete mathematics.
General Algebra in the narrow sense is mainly investigated by Prof. Burmeister (partial algebras), Prof. Wille (General Algebra in connection with Formal Concept Analysis) and by Dr. Ihringer (General Algebra in connection with geometry and group theory). Applications of General Algebra include among other things the theory of abstract data types and deduction in algebraic systems.
Discrete Mathematics is in the Arbeitsgruppe investigated in the context of order and lattice theory, whose applied branch is Formal Concept Analysis. Applications which are an integral part of research, also in interdisciplinary cooperation, include for example the analysis of empirical data and the processing and systematic acquisition of knowledge. The current work is presented in the Forschungsgruppe Begriffsanalyse
A further research area of the Arbeitsgruppe is Mathematical Music Theory . The main goal in this context is the development of an extensional standard language of music theory and its implementation on computer-controlled musical instruments. Further fields of interest are General Mathematics and the philosophy of mathematics.

I have posted my Algebra text at http://hutnick.com/writings/fcp/ainh.pdf . There aren't any figures yet, so it is a small download. I am open to suggestions and edits. Oh, and chapters. I'd love to find some chapters in my inbox. (If I'm going to dream, I might as well dream big . . .)
I have collaborated a bit with the Free High School Science Text ( http://www.nongnu.org/fhsst/ ) folks. They are trying to produce printed books for South African students. They are going in a somewhat different direction with their "Maths" text than I am with my Algebra text, but as it progresses I might cannibalize some of it. (If that sounds weird to you, let me know. We can have a discussion about how the FDL works.)
I have made considerable progress on the goal of coming up with a suite of Free software for generating our materials. Sadly, this progress is exclusively in that I have discovered a lot of things that won't work.

ILAS - The International Linear Algebra Society - was founded in 1989 as the successor to the International Matrix Group which was established in 1987. The general goal of ILAS is to encourage activities in linear algebra. ILAS aims to encourage and support existing groups and individuals active in organizing meetings and publications in all aspects of linear algebra. We have no intention of supplanting or competing with existing organizations, our entire purpose is international co-ordination, to assist the development of linear algebra. We may add new activities where and when desirable. We welcome activities in all applications of linear algebra and we desire a proper share for theoretical matrix analysis and abstract linear algebra. ILAS initiates, encourages and co-ordinates linear algebra meetings, and supports them by the means available, such as information delivery. ILAS Inaugural Meeting took place in Provo, Utah, USA, on August 12-15, 1989. You can check for the list of all ILAS Conferences ILAS' Education Committee handles undergraduate and graduate Linear Algebra studies. Among others, it operates a joint NSF- ILAS Project to Augment the Teaching Linear Algebra through the use of Software Tools (ATLAST). The project has offered several workshops in various places.

    The History of Algebra
Algebra may divided into "classical algebra" (equation solving or "find the unknown number" problems) and "abstract algebra", also called "modern algebra" (the study of groups, rings, and fields). Classical algebra has been developed over a period of 4000 years. Abstract algebra has only appeared in the last 200 years. The development of algebra is outlined in these notes under the following headings: Egyptian algebra, Babylonian algebra, Greek geometric algebra, Diophantine algebra, Hindu algebra, Arabic algebra, European algebra since 1500, and modern algebra. Since algebra grows out of arithmetic, recognition of new numbers - irrationals, zero, negative numbers, and complex numbers - is an important part of its history. The development of algebraic notation progressed through three stages: the rhetorical (or verbal) stage, the syncopated stage (in which abbreviated words were used), and the symbolic stage with which we are all familiar. The materials presented here are adapted from many sources including Burton, Kline's Mathematical Development From Ancient to Modern Times, Boyer's A History of Mathematics , and the essay on "The History of Algebra" by Baumgart in Historical Topics for the Mathematics Classroom - the 31st yearbook of the N.C.T.M.
