History
Applications and related fields
"Algebra" is a very broad section of mathematics; there are separate index pages here for specific algebraic categories (groups, fields, etc.) This heading focuses both on the broad principles covering all of algebra and on specific algebraic constructs not included in those other areas. By extension (and somewhat inappropriately) we use it to house a few resources discussing many areas of algebra. Universal algebra is arguably more a topic in Logic (03C05) (Model Theory), hence there is significant overlap. For Boolean algebras and generalizations see Ordered algebraic structures (06E) For groupoids, semigroups, and other multiplicative sets see Group Theory (sections 20L, 20M, 20N).

Covering key areas of college algebra, such as the coordinate plane, circles, lines and intercepts and parabolas, this text identifies strengths and weaknesses in understanding to boost levels of knowledge and confidence. Book Review:
One of the most valuable tools acquired in a university education, college algebra is essential for courses from the sciences to computing, engineering to mathematics. It can help you dobetter on placement exams, even before college, and it's useful in solving the computations of daily life. Now anyone with an interest in college algebra can master it. A prime number is an integer, other than zero or one, that has only two factors, itself and one. Definition of Even Number An even number is an integer which is divisible by two. All even numbers can be written in the form , where n is an integer. Definition of Odd Number An odd number is an integer which is not divisible by two. All odd numbers can be weritten in the form or , where n is an integer. Definition of Radius of a Circle The radius of a circle is the distance from the center of the circle to any point on the circle. Definition of the Diameter of a Circle The diameter of a circle is equal to two times the radius, (d=2r).

The Research Group on General Algebra and its Applications is one of the most active and well-established research groups in the Mathematics Department at La Trobe University. Its members include academic staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, honours students and visitors. The group's research centres on general algebra, the theory of natural dualities, semigroup theory, lattice theory, and related areas. The research group has attracted talented young mathematicians who have won two-year La Trobe University Post-Doctoral Fellowships (Dr M. Haviar and Dr J. Tuma) and three-year ARC Post-Doctoral Fellowships (Dr M. Jackson and Dr J. Pitkethly). The group also attracts the leading international researchers for stays of between one and two months; see the list of recent visitors below. The group meets at a weekly seminar throughout the academic year. A list of recent topics and details of the present seminar series are given in the Calendar of Events below.

    Introduction
This chapter describes the functionality for modules over general algebras in Magma. A left-module over an algebra A is a vector space V together with a bilinear map A x V to V. A right-module over A is a vector space V together with a bilinear map V x A to V. Magma provides functionality for both kinds of modules.
    Construction of Algebra Modules
For an algebra A this function creates a module over A. If the module will be a left-module then m is a map from the Cartesian product A x V to V. If the module will be a right-module then m is a map from V x A to V. Here V has to be an R-module, where R is the coefficient field of A.
    Example
We create the right-module over the full matrix algebra of 3 x 3 - matrices acting on its natural module.
The Action of an Algebra Element
Given an element v of a left-module over an algebra A, and an element a of A computes the result of letting a act on v.
