Is drinking alcohol harming my health now, or will it be harmful to me later in life? Should I stop drinking alcohol? Am I a binge drinker? Most adults who drink alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, or liquor) consume safe and healthy amounts. For others, unsafe drinking patterns increase their risk for injury, illness or future alcohol problems. And, for 1 in 13 American adults, alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence (alcoholism) causes substantial harm to their health and disruption in their lives. If you consume alcoholic beverages, it's important to know whether your drinking patterns are safe, risky or harmful. Answering these questions will take only a few minutes, and will generate personalized results based on your age, gender and drinking patterns. Some History
Alcohol has been used medicinally throughout recorded history; its medicinal properties are mentioned 191 times in the Old and New Testaments. As early as the turn of the century there was evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol was associated with a decrease in the risk of heart attack. And the evidence of health benefits of moderate consumption has continued to grow over time. KNOWING UNIVERSITY POLICY
The alcohol policy at Princeton has been well received by undergraduates. In fact, according to a 2002 study of Princeton undergrads, most students believe the policy is about right, neither too lenient nor too strict. Just remember that rights are always accompanied by responsibilities. Consistent with the drinking laws in New Jersey, University policy prohibits the consumption and serving of alcoholic beverages by and to persons under 21. Intoxication is not a valid excuse for violating University regulations. Under University policy, you are obligated to help severely drunk people. From

Drugs and alcohol can harm your health
Using alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs or illicit drugs at work can have serious consequences. They can impair judgement and coordination, or be compounded by exposure to other substances in the workplace. Around one quarter of all workplace accidents, and 15-30% of all fatalities, involve employees under the influence of alcohol. Employers should be encouraged to reconise that stress and working environment can increase the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. But workers have important responsibilities to stay straight at work. If you can't do your job properly, you risk prosecution under your award or agreement. You can help reduce unsafe use of drugs and alcohol and organise OHS with your delegate and Union to make your workplace free of risk and hazards.
How can you minimise harm from alcohol and drugs?
The way to minimise the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol at work is to make sure that a fair drugs and alcohol policy. This policy should be developed by sitting down to work out a processes that help people with problems.

A guide to some of the newest research and recommendations
Newsweek Aug. 9, 2005 - Two out of three teens say it's easy to get alcohol from their homes without their parents finding out and nearly one in four teens say their own parents have supplied them with alcohol , according to two nationwide polls released this week by the American Medical Association. The findings were taken from two polls funded through the AMA's partnership with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: a Teenage Research Unlimited survey of 701 teenagers and a Harris Interactive poll of 2,283 parents (17 percent of whom had children between 12 and 20 years old). In the second survey, one in four parents of underage children admitted that they have allowed their kids to drink with their supervision in the past six months. And while 71 percent of parents with children between 12 and 20 years old disagreed with the statement that teen drinking was okay if a parent were present, 76 percent of those same parents believe it is likely that children get alcohol from a parent. "From a public health standpoint, these findings are frankly disturbing," said Dr. J. Edward Hill, AMA president, in a statement. The AMA has recommended physicians counsel parents on the health risks of alcohol use and that parents prohibit teen access to alcohol (even under supervision).

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Health?
Check it out in free screenings on National Alcohol Day HealthDayNews American adults who drink are being encouraged to take part in free nationwide screenings April 8 to find out how alcohol affects their health. The "Alcohol and Your Health Where Do You Draw the Line?" screenings will be offered at more than 5,000 sites across the United States as part of National Alcohol Screening Day. "National Alcohol Screening Day can help save lives by maximizing the power of prevention," U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard H. Carmona said in a prepared statement. "No one wants to hurt themselves or others through drinking, and a free screening provides the opportunity to learn how alcohol affects you so that you can prevent risks from becoming tragedies." "Drinking can have unintended and even tragic consequences," Carmona added, noting that alcohol consumption in the United States leads to more than 100,000 deaths each year from related injuries and illnesses.

Alcohol withdrawal
Contents of this page: Definition Alcohol withdrawal refers to symptoms that may occur when a person who has been drinking too much alcohol every day suddenly stops drinking alcohol. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Alcohol withdrawal usually occurs in adults, but it may happen in teenagers or children as well. It can occur when a person who uses alcohol excessively suddenly stops drinking alcohol. The withdrawal usually occurs within 5 - 10 hours after the last drink, but it may occur up to 7 - 10 days later. Excessive alcohol use is generally considered the equivalent of 2 - 6 pints of beer (or 4 oz. of "hard" alcohol) per day for 1 week, or habitual use of alcohol that disrupts a person's life and routines. The more heavily a person had been drinking every day, the more likely that person will develop alcohol withdrawal symptoms when they stop. The likelihood of developing severe withdrawal symptoms also increases if a person has other medical problems. Symptoms Mild-to-moderate psychological symptoms:
  • Jumpiness or nervousness Shakiness Anxiety Irritability or easy excitability Rapid emotional changes Depression Fatigue Difficulty thinking clearly Bad dreams

Fall 2003
Here are a few scientific truths from the world of diet and nutrition: Some fat is good for you, and some fat is bad for you. Fruits and vegetables are full of health-promoting nutrients. And a daily glass of red wine will prolong your life. Few would dispute the nutritional value of olive oil, but should everyone have a glass of merlot with their daily apple? Although there is consensus among the scientific community that alcohol protects against heart disease, a prescription of a daily drink might not be appropriate for everyone. What much of the research on alcohol reveals is complicated and inconclusive. But the good news is that in certain circumstances, there is enough information for consumers to make informed decisions about drinking.

It may seem that everyone around you drinks, especially with alcohol ads all over the place, but there are many teens that do NOT drink. You do not need to drink to have fun, be popular, or be comfortable with other people. You can choose to say NO to alcohol when friends want to drink. Here are some ways:
  • Just say, "No thanks" or “I don’t drink.”
