In the days before the CPR was built, travellers to the west came up the easterly flowing rivers, through the waterways of Manitoba, moving up the North Saskatchewan River by way of Battleford to Edmonton. These men were fur traders, and they kept primarily to the wooded central and northern areas, where they established trading posts. Fort Edmonton developed early into a major centre of trade for the Hudson's Bay Company, and soon attracted settlers who ventured into agricultural pursuits. Development in southern Alberta came almost a century later. There were several reasons for this, with some of the foremost being that is was not as easily accessible from Winnipeg across the vast dry stretches of barren prairie, and that it was the territory of the fierce Blackfoot Indians. However, by the 1860s and 1870s, the region was being invaded by men from the American West, who were greedy for the profits of the buffalo hunt. The whiskey trade flourished in a wild and lawless society. After the massacre of a group of Indian families at Cypress Hills in 1873, the North West Mounted Police force was created to bring order to the Canadian west. In 1875 "F" Troop, consisting of 37 men, established Fort Calgary at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

The Beaver Hills make up a large portion of modern day Strathcona County. The Hills, along with numerous lakes, ponds and streams, are the product of the Ice Age and the melting of the last great glaciers about 12,000 years ago. The glaciers also produced the Cooking Lake moraine with its rolling hills, gravel deposits and rich black loam soils. Closer to the North Saskatchewan River were lake bottom deposits left by a glacier melt lake - Lake Edmonton. The lake was short-lived, disappearing when the ice mountain at its southern extreme melted. The forests which grew in the well watered Beaver Hills became shelter to a myriad of animals and birds - including fox, lynx, bobcats, wolves, beaver, muskrat, moose, bear, martin, mink, elk, mule deer, white tail deer, and even caribou. The streams and lakes teemed with fish and water birds.

  • Alberta's urban population surpassed the rural population for the first time. 169,196 of those people lived in Edmonton. The city's Waterloo Mercurys were the last Canadian winners of Olympic hockey gold for 50 years. The new Edmonton Symphony Orchestra debuted. The 107-kilogram Abee meteorite fell northeast of Edmonton. CBC launched Canada's first TV station in Montreal, folllowed by Toronto two days later. Vincent Massey became the first native-born governor-general. New law provided universal old age pensions to Canadians 70 and over. America exploded the first nuclear fusion, or hydrogen, bomb. 500 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb, it obliterated a Pacific island. King George VI died and his daughter became Queen Elizabeth II at age 25. BOAC made the world's first scheduled passenger jet flight, from London to South Africa. Bwana Devil was the first 3D movie. Chicago's Bill Mosienko scored three goals in 21 seconds, the NHL's fastest hat trick ever. Gordie Howe won the first of six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player. Greetings. I have had the privilege of working with History students at Athabasca University since 1978. I wrote Athabasca University's first batch of History courses and have been pleased to see the History program blossom over the years. Currently, David Gregory, Jeremy Mouat, Cathy Cavanaugh, and Jeff Taylor join me in providing History offerings. As the list below may suggest, I have been fortunate enough to persuade a variety of publishers to place my research findings before the public. Perhaps because of my long experience producing courses for AU, I am much in demand as an author of textbooks in Canadian history. Teaching Experience

    History
The need for access to health ethics resources was first formally articulated in the Premier's Commission on Future Health Care for Albertans (the Rainbow Report, 1989), a Provincial Government Commission report that highlighted health care needs expressed by Albertans. Subsequently, the Alberta Health document, Partners in Care, underscored the need for enhanced health ethics resources. Following discussion of Partners in Care, it was decided that a 'network' would be more helpful to Albertans than a 'centre' or 'centres' since access to a network could thereby be available to all regions of the Province. In November 1992, Alberta Health developed a discussion paper proposing a Provincial Health Ethics Network and invited several hundred individuals involved in health care ethics to form a core committee to develop a proposal for such a Network. To do so, the core committee sent a questionnaire to key stake holders in health care in Alberta, convened a stake holders' meeting for future input, and submitted a preliminary proposal for a Provincial Health Ethics Network to Alberta Health in spring 1993. The government responded with the tabling of Alberta Health's Three Year Plan on February 24, 1994. This plan contained a strategy to: "Establish an ethics network to facilitate the examination of moral and ethical issues and to facilitate individual decision-making related to health, health care, and quality of life." Subsequently an enlarged committee developed a further proposal which was submitted to Alberta Health in January 1995.

The major difference between a Canadian province and a Canadian territory is that a province is a creation of the Constitution Act (17 April 1982), while a territory is created by federal law. Thus, the federal government has more direct control over the territories, while provincial governments have many more competences and rights.
