This sprightly and amusing video manages to inform viewers about an important and often overlooked part of Alberta's and Canada's history. A part of "The People's History of the West" series, this video shows what happened in Leduc in 1947 as well as explaining the importance of Imperial Oil's find in 1947 which opened the floodgates for the oil trade in Alberta.
The video focuses on photographs from the era and cartoons illustrating stories told by Vern "Dry Hole" Hunter, the head driller from the Leduc well. Vern's own story, as well as stories he tells to illustrate the hardships and wonders of the time, are informative and amusing, a wonderful combination. Imperial Oil's decision to try one more well, after almost 150 wells came up dry, adds a sense of drama to the eventual success of Leduc's well.
This short video would be a wonderful addition to a discussion of natural resources, Alberta's history, or Alberta's economy. By 1985, the Leduc field had produced 35,000,000 barrels, finding a place in Alberta's history.

Government Alberta: History and People History: The Aboriginal people, the Piegan, Cree, Blackfoot, Blood, Gros Ventre, Sarcee, Kootenay, Beaver and Slavey Indians, speaking a variety of Athapaskan and Algonkian languages, were the first people to live in what is now Alberta. They inhabited a vast wilderness territory, living nomadically hunting and trapping and foraging the rich natural resources of the land. The woodland tribes of the central and northern regions, became partners of the European fur traders who arrived in the 18th century. The first European to reach what is now Alberta was Anthony Henday in 1754, although the land was claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670. Peter Pond, of the North West Company, established the first fur-trading post in 1778. The rival Hudson's Bay Company built competing fur-trading posts over the next century and a half. The rivalry ended in 1821, when the two companies merged. Interest in colonization of the west increased in Britain after the American Civil War. In 1867 with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA) and the establishment of the Dominion of Canada the new Canadian Government acquired the North West Territories, including present day Alberta from the Hudson's Bay Company.

How ALBERTA got its name.
The district of Alberta was created in 1882, and enlarged to become a province of Canada on September 1, 1905. The name was suggested by the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, in honour of his wife, H.R.H. Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. EDMONTON Name taken from Fort Edmonton, built in 1795 farther down the North Saskatchewan River than the present city. The fort was destroyed in 1807, but was relocated within the site of the present city limits by the Hudson's Bay Company some time before 1819. The fort is reputed to have been named by William Tomison for Edmonton, now part of metropolitan London, England, in honour of the birthplace of John Peter Pruden, a clerk of the Hudson's Bay Company. This uplifting documentary features the tireless efforts of individuals in the Edmonton Muslim community who rallied together to save the Al-Rashid mosque. The first mosque to be built in Canada, it was slated for demolition in the year of its 50th anniversary. Organizers who took on the enormous task of restoring and relocating the mosque talk about the project and its significance. They provide insight into the controversy that emerged when it was decided to move the mosque to Edmonton's living history museum, Fort Edmonton Park. Al Tasmim celebrates the pride of the Muslim community when, in May 1992, they had secured a place for the mosque in Edmonton's history.
