Racism in the Canadian Labour Market
Excluding the talents of immigrants is the most disadvantageous way
of reaching sustainable economic development
Systemic Racism is a specific type of racism. It usually deals with employment... Sunday, September 18, 2005
F or the past 70 years, immigration has continued growing in Canada ; however, the composition of this trend changed during the 1960s; the number of immigrants from Europe and the United States decreased while the presence of immigrants from other source areas started growing to the point that they were the majority of the foreign born population in 2001.
The increasing demographic presence of immigrants of visible minorities demands equal access to employment opportunities, which let them play their occupational roles according to their professional backgrounds, so they can contribute to the development of this country and enjoy the benefits of it.
Therefore, our objective is to provide an interdisciplinary and collaborative site, where the analysis and discussion about discrimination against recent immigrants in the Canadian job market can articulate effective proposals to eliminate

CBC is currently experiencing a labour disruption. INDEPTH: MAD COW
Mad Cow in Canada: The science and the story
For years, Canada had been virtually free of mad cow disease. But in May 2003, veterinary officials in Alberta confirmed that a sick cow sent to a slaughterhouse in January of that year had been inspected, found to be substandard, and removed so that it would not end up as food for humans or other animals.
The carcass was, however, sent to a processing plant for rendering into oils. Its head was kept for testing. Samples were sent to the world testing laboratories in the U.K., which confirmed the case of mad cow.
"What is important is that the system worked," said Shirley McClellan, Alberta's agriculture minister at the time. "We have a very thorough and respected inspection system." She was insistent to remind the public that the disease is not contagious within a herd.

Jetsgo Ceases Operations MONTREAL, March 11 /CNW/ - Jetsgo Corporation announced today that it is
ceasing all operations effective immediately.
Passengers are advised to make alternative travel arrangements prior to going to the airport as there will be no Jetsgo staff or aircraft available. Travellers seeking to return to their point of origin must make alternative arrangements with other airlines or with their travel agent or tour operator. Jetsgo will be asking that the Quebec Superior Court immediately grant it protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. Court protection will allow Jetsgo to consider all options available to reorganize its affairs. Given difficult market conditions resulting from competitive pressures in the Canadian airline industry, Jetsgo has determined that, in the circumstances, it is prudent and responsible to discontinue its operations and ground all of its planes.
Michel Leblanc, President of Jetsgo, said: "We deeply regret that this had to happen. The decision to cease operations was only taken after difficult deliberation. We are very concerned about our customers and the significant hardship that this action causes. In the meantime, we encourage our passengers to contact their travel agent or an alternative airline."
