Alberta government releases land
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. (CP) - After warnings and much lobbying, the Alberta government took action Wednesday to help this booming oilsands city continue to grow. The province announced it will release 400 hectares of Crown land for badly needed housing and promised to improve the community's overstressed water and wastewater treatment plants. Earlier this year, Mayor Melissa Blake told the province that future oilsands development in the area would be at risk without such improvements. "These are first steps to address some of the most immediate pressures," Energy Minister Greg Melchin said during a speech in Fort McMurray. The government has also agreed to accelerate road improvements in the area. The community is also pushing for hospital and other social service upgrades to help deal with a growing population of 61,000 that could almost double in the next few years.

One person can make a difference. When Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run across Canada on April 12, 1980 his goal was to raise $1 for every person in Canada for cancer research. That would have been about $24 million in 1980. The Terry Fox Foundation says that in the last 25 years more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. Just yesterday, Ujjal Dosanjh, the Canadian federal Minister of Health, gave a $10-million grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada to the Terry Fox Foundation. And the marathon continues....

Biodiversity
1993 Grade: B 1994 Grade: B 1995 Grade: F 1996 Grade: D Alberta remains slow to respond to the needs to protect biological diversity. Some progress was made in protected areas in the last year, allowing them to move from a failing mark to a low pass. A Special Places Policy was implemented, and the Willmore Provincial Park received further protection through an act establishing the area as a wilderness park barring off road vehicles, roads, and industrial or commercial development. The law essentially codified the conditions that have prevailed in the Willmore Park since it was first established in 1959. Meanwhile, the opening of once protected areas to development continues to be a problem. As noted in last year's report card, Alberta has redefined "protected areas" to allow resource development. Legislative reform is necessary as existing parks legislation does not prohibit industrial development. Roads and five wells have gone into the Dinosaur Provincial Park. This is a particularly appalling development when one considers that the Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other parks are also suffering. Off-road vehicle use is occurring in Lakeland Provincial Park. The Park has also had a well drilled within its borders and logging is being considered. The Cypress Hills Provincial Park is also facing threats of logging and intensified agriculture.

The girl in the photo is enjoying a special place, a Grasslands vista in Southern Alberta. It is but one of the six diverse landscapes that make Alberta, our homeplace, so special. In this website, Alberta artists, photographers, and writers present you with information about and images of Alberta's diverse and beautiful landscapes You will also find information about the diverse species that are uniquely dependent on our special places, parks and wilderness areas for their existence. You will learn that both the special places and the species are at risk. Much of the information on this webpage is taken from the Alberta Government's Fish and Wildlife Division. I have also borrowed from the vision of sustainable development that was developed by Alberta's Roundtable on Enviornment and Economy on which I served and that was adopted by all three of Alberta's Political Parties. In preparing the information on these webpages, I have taken care to present information that is scientifically accurate. I acknowledge that science doesn't tell us everything. Each Albertan who cares about parks and wild species must make an educated decision about these matters. It's a matter of values informed by the best science that is available. It is my hope that you will find these pages aesthetically, spiritually and intellectually rewarding.

100. Alberta's Endangered Species
According to the alberta government Fish Wildlife Branch The Canadian Federal government has now tabled Endangered Species Legislation which is being
http://raysweb.net/specialplaces/pages/species.html
Burrowing Owl Photo: Greg Lasley In order to protect Alberta's Endangered species, it's important to find the answers to three questions:
  • what does it mean when a species is 'endangered?'
  • which Alberta species are endangered?
  • what can be done to help them?
This page provides information that will help you find answers to the first two questions and describes some organizations and programs that are working to restore extinct species or to keep endangered species from becoming extinct. The Alberta Special Places Page tells you about Alberta's six distinct types of habitat on which species depend. It is our belief that an important way to protect species is to provide long term protection for at least a portion of their habitat. For many people, the term ' endangered species ' brings to mind well known, large animals like the African Elephant. According to the
  • 20 species of Alberta fish and wildlife are in serious risk of dying out in our province.
  • 2 species are already gone.
  • only 55 per cent of the 535 species found in Alberta are considered healthy.
So, the problem exists right here in our own backyard.
