General News CAC Pans Alberta Government's 'Promised' 5% Auto Premium Reduction
(May 25, 2004) The Consumers' Association of Canada (CAC) is panning the Alberta government's promise of a five per cent reduction in auto premiums for good drivers, once the province's freeze is over.
Finance Minister Pat Nelson says the rollback will ensure Alberta drivers are paying rates that are comparable with the ones paid by motorists in other western provinces.
Bruce Cran, the president of the Consumers' Association of Canada, says it will take more than a five per cent cut to put Alberta on equal footing.
"Should I die laughing, it's absolutely an insult to even suggest that," he says. "Albertans are paying, by far, the highest rates in Western Canada and they are also among the highest in Canada."
Cran says rates would have to go down by much more than five per cent to make Alberta comparable to provinces with public auto insurance systems.
"British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are substantially less," he says. "And if you want to look at a place like Lloydminster on the border, some people have a choice of taking either. You'll find that people in that area would give you some pretty horrified looks if you suggested five per cent was going to make a difference."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 25, 2004
Consumers' Association Calls On Alberta Government To Return To The Drawing Board on Auto Insurance
Ottawa, May 25, 2004 - The Consumers' Association of Canada today called for the Alberta Government to go back to the drawing board on the auto insurance issue. “Consumers in Alberta are upset with the Government of Alberta’s lack of solution on the auto insurance issue”, said Mr. Bruce Cran, President of the Association. “Clearly, the Government’s current solution is no solution at all for Alberta consumers”.
Last year Statistics Canada reported auto insurance rates in Alberta increased by 50%. This past week the Alberta Government announced its solution to these massive price increases. The Government announced it would roll back auto insurance rates by 5% and cap benefits for innocent victims of car crashes. “When this was announced most consumers probably thought it was some type of delayed April Fool’s joke”, said Mr. Cran.
“The Government of Alberta spent months inventing a solution to the auto insurance issue. The product of their best efforts is unacceptable to consumers”, said Mr. Cran. “It’s also not factual in that auto insurance industry calculations indicate the final reductions will only be 2%, not 5% as claimed by the Government”.
