Advertisement While badlands are scattered throughout Canada's prairies, Alberta is home to some Canada's largest and most impressive examples. They're especially common in the river valleys of southern Alberta, where badlands flank some 300 kilometres of the Red Deer River Dinosaur Provincial Park , near Drumheller , offers some of the area's most spectacular sights, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alberta's badlands were formed by a combination of glacier movement, meltwater and precipitation. Seventy-five million years ago (in what's called the late Cretaceous period hoodoos seen in Dinosaur Provincial Park. During the last ice age (15,000 years ago) Alberta's badlands were flat and covered by a massive sheet of ice, hundreds of metres thick. This ice began to retreat, producing glacial meltwaters that carved out the landscape. Today, the erosion process continues with rain and wind.

Canada T1K 3M4 home.uleth.ca/geo/geodept.htm GEOGRAPHY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE:
A SHORT HISTORY The University of Lethbridge was founded January 1, 1967. George Zieber (PhD, Alberta), who since 1964 had held an appointment in the university section of Lethbridge Community College, was appointed to the Geography Department at the rank of Assistant Professor along with a British geographer, John Randel, who left the university after only a year. In 1968 three more geographers were added to the department. Elbert Miller (PhD, U of Washington), was appointed at the rank of Full Professor, Roy Fletcher (PhD, Clark) was appointed at the rank of Associate, and Marvin Sundstrom, who at the time held an MA from University of Maryland, was appointed as Lecturer. Sundstrom left after two years to pursue his PhD at McMaster, but returned to Lethbridge as an Assistant Professor in 1976, where he remained until his untimely death in 1994. Both Miller and Fletcher had many years of teaching experience in the United States, although Fletcher was, in fact, the first BA in geography to graduate from the University of Alberta. Over the next several years, the department grew by two more geographers. After spending nearly a decade at the University of Montana, Chester (Chip) Beaty (PhD, UC Berkeley) was appointed at the rank of Full Professor, and soon after Frank Jankunis (PhD, UCLA), accepted an appointment as an Assistant Professor. Both Beaty, a former smoke jumper with the US Forest Service, and Jankunis, who had been a US Marine and briefly played professional baseball as a pitcher, added much colour to the department.

http://www.rcgs.org/rcgs/expeditions/expeditions.asp
Recent Expeditions Previous Expeditions How to Apply Expeditions Program Background For many, the terms "geography" and "expedition" are synonymous. In fact, most Canadians are introduced to the discipline of geography through exposure to "geographic expeditions", as presented in popular and academic publications. Through expeditions, geographic appreciation, understanding and knowledge expand. To promote this tradition, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) supports an Expeditions Program to encourage and support geographic expeditions taking place largely within Canada, by Canadians. Extending our current knowledge of Canada's geography through exploration and scientific expeditions, the RCGS has funded some major expeditions across the country. Deadlines for applications are March 1st and October 1st each year.
