One person can make a difference. When Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run across Canada on April 12, 1980 his goal was to raise $1 for every person in Canada for cancer research. That would have been about $24 million in 1980. The Terry Fox Foundation says that in the last 25 years more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. Just yesterday, Ujjal Dosanjh, the Canadian federal Minister of Health, gave a $10-million grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada to the Terry Fox Foundation. And the marathon continues....

PEACE BIOGRAPHY- ROBERT (BOB) STEWART, C.A., C.M.C.
Bob Stewart, a Chartered Accountant in public practice and Certified Management Consultant, has held many senior management positions in business and government over the past 31 years. Bob recognized, as do others, that the Culture of Peace Program is on the threshold of making a major impact pacifically, nationally and internationally, but is currently lacking direction and capacity. He has devoted himself to using his professional skills as a (general) manager and information manager to help advance this 'direction and capacity' by founding the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace.. Bob has been a member of Rotary International, an organization with 1.2 million members world-wide and a mission of helping to advance peace and world understanding, since 1986, first in Yellowknife and currently in Okotoks, Alberta. As Chair of the Rotary District 5360 Urban Hope/Peace Plus Committee for the past 3 years he has been developing Member and Club interest in Building Peace in Our Communities and World. In February 1999, Bob has been appointed a Special Ambassador of the Rotary Peace Cities Project. Bob is also a Member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO's National Working Group to promote the United Nations International Year for a Culture of Peace in 2000 and has developed one of the most comprehensive, plain language Peace and Non-violence web sites in the world as a resource for people who wish to become more active in building peace. What is Western Canadian culture?
As is typical of the media, they hit Cory Morgan, the interim leader of the Alberta Independence Party, on the occasion of its founding convention, with a difficult question, expecting an immediate and short answer. He responded quite clearly that he couldn't give the type of "sound bite" answer they needed. The question was "What is Western Canadian culture?" This we need to answer, and it is not a short, tidy sound bite of an answer. First, we believe, it is the common language, English, which 95% of us speak without difficulty. That is a powerful unifying force. Then, it is love of individual freedom, which most people have learned from the experience of our pioneers who came here for just that. This is commonly the pattern in westward migration, throughout the world. Many people have come here, today, seeking freedom. Then there is the obvious love of our land and environment, which we cherish as our sacred heritage and which gives us our wealth in our farms, forests, lakes, rivers and resources. We have been traditionally (and this is imbued in our being as a people) a resource-based economy. Although our economy is always changing and developing new productive outlets, our nature as resource-based is fundamental, and forms a basic element of our consciousness.

Alberta
The district of Alberta was created in 1882, and enlarged to become a province of Canada on September 1, 1905. The name was suggested by the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, in honor of his wife, H.R.H. Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. British Columbia
Much of the mainland region was originally known as New Caledonia; however, this name (duplicated in South Pacific) was discarded in favor of British Columbia. The designation appears to have originated with Queen Victoria and was officially proclaimed in 1858. Columbia (after the Columbia River which was named by the American Captain Robert Gray for his ship Columbia ) had previously been loosely applied to the southern portion of the colony. Created as a province in 1870, the name was probably first applied to Lake Manitoba. There are two theories as to the origin of the name. (1) It is of Assiniboine origin:

News Releases - Alberta - 2004 September 03, 2004 FORT SASKATCHEWAN, Alberta - The new Dow Centennial Centre, a cultural and recreation facility in Fort Saskatchewan, received a boost of $3.2 million in tripartite funding through the Infrastructure Canada- Alberta Program (ICAP) to help put the finishing touches on this much-anticipated community centre. The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), and the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Alberta Minister of Transportation, together with Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Ken Hodgins, today announced funding for this project to assist with building and energy efficiency enhancements, as well as the paving of the parking lot, landscaping and signage. The Dow Centennial Centre includes a 550-seat theatre, art gallery, pottery and visual arts studios, meeting and banquet rooms, ice arena, indoor soccer pitch, fitness area and walking/running track. To date, 611 projects have been announced in Alberta under the program. With this project, ICAP has met its target of directing at least $508 million in federal, provincial and municipal funding toward municipal water and wastewater systems, municipal roads, bridges and transit, affordable housing, solid waste disposal and recycling, tourism, cultural or recreation facilities, or projects to improve energy efficiencies of municipal buildings.

Because of the leadership of Alberta Culture in the designation and protection of historic buildings enshrined in legislation, the Ministry in its various incarnations (Alberta Culture, Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism, and, finally, Alberta Community Development) has played an important role in promoting and publishing research on the architectural heritage. Convocation “Best Day of the Year” Mount Royal College’s Convocation 2005 was a time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past 95 years and to embrace a bold new future. "Mount Royal is continually growing and expanding in its journey to become Canada’s foremost undergraduate post-secondary institution," said President Dave Marshall. "How we measure the success of that goal
Mount Royal graduates celebrate at Convocation 2005. is through our students. And based on the achievements and abilities of the new graduates sitting before us today, we are measuring up very well indeed." “This is the best day of the year at Mount Royal,” said Marshall. Hal Kvisle, Chair of the Board of Governors, told the graduates they should savour their academic success and could take pride in the institution which helped them achieve it. “For 95 years, Mount Royal College has continuously evolved in order to provide students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in their careers.”
