Borage Culture on the Black Soil Zone of Alberta, Canada
R. El Hafid, S.F. Blade, and Y. Hoyano Recently, borage ( Borago officinalis L. Boraginaceae) has been the subject of increasing agricultural interest because of the potential market for gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an unusual fatty acid extracted from the oil seed. GLA is an omega-6 essential fatty acid which has been identified as having several beneficial properties. Increased interest in production of the crop in western Canada has brought about a need for adequate agronomic management practices since very little local research information was available. Field studies were conducted in central Alberta in 1998 and 1999 on a black Malmo silt loam soil to evaluate the effects of planting date and nitrogen fertility level on borage seed yield, harvest index, and seed oil GLA content. Plots from all possible combinations of two planting dates (early vs late) and four nitrogen fertility rates (0, 20, 40, and 80 kg N/ha) were established and arranged in a factorial randomized complete block design. Plots were harvested twice during each growing season.

Continuity and Change: The Cultural Life of Alberta's
First Ukrainians
x, 268 pp., illus., photographs, maps
$34.95 (cloth) Order About the Book
A comprehensive, interdisciplinary examination of the life of the first Ukrainian immigrants. The volume consists of eight parts. It begins with a prologue by Roman Onufrijchuk that sets the stage for understanding the difficult process of cultural transmission and accomodation, made even more difficult for the first Ukrainian settlers, who were from the peasant stratum as well as pioneers. It ends with a more theoretical epilogue by Ian H. Angus that points up the unique significance of ethnocultural communities in rescuing Canadian identity from the universalizing grip of homogenizing cultures like that of the United States. In between, the volume explores (in the second part) the historical conditions in western Ukraine and western Canada at the turn of the century, the overall nature of the rural Ukrainian bloc settlement in east central Alberta (the largest in Canada), and the contrast between the cluster village in Ukraine and the railroad village in the West. In this part, John-Paul Himka presents the hypothesis tested indirectly by subsequent presentations: "Ukrainian immigrants in Canada were at first not only culturally more traditional/backward than most Canadians but also more traditional/backward than their contemporaries in western Ukraine."

Household Transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Alberta, Canada
Proven or presumptive multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia was diagnosed simultaneously in three married couples in Alberta, Canada. The pair of isolates from each couple had identical antibiotic resistance profiles, serotypes, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns. One or more of these cases could have been prevented by S. pneumoniae vaccine. Outbreaks of Streptococcus pneumoniae (antibiotic resistant and nonresistant) have been reported from child-care centers, nursing homes, hospitals, military camps, homeless shelters, and penal institutions ( ). Simultaneous cases within households have rarely been reported ( ); such cases require common exposure and transmission, as well as similar likelihood of disease in the hosts or increased virulence in the pathogen. In December 1996 and January 1997, three married couples with multidrug-resistant S. pneumoniae (MDRSP) were admitted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. The couples were not admitted on the same day. None of the couples lived with children, although couple C had daily contact with children. All patients received appropriate antibiotic therapy after their culture and antibiotic sensitivity results were known. We reviewed each patient's health record (

In the United States and Canada the frontier was the term applied until the end of the 19th century to the zone of unsettled land outside the region of existing settlements of European immigrants and their descendants. ... Summer brings many festivals to the province. Edmonton's Fringe Festival is the world's second largest after Edinburgh 's. Alberta also hosts some of Canada's largest Folk Festivals, Multicultural Festivals, and Heritage Days (to name a few). Calgary is also home to Carifest, the second largest Caribbean festival in the nation (after Caribana in Toronto ). These events highlight the province's cultural diversity and love of entertainment. Most of the major cities have several performing theatre companies who entertain in venues as diverse as the Arts Barns and the Francis Winspear Centre.

Photo by Julie Ann Biggs Oil and Gas Grease the Alberta Skids
... an overview of how Oil and Gas affect Alberta's economy and how it all started ...
Oil and Gas are found In Alberta, BC, Sask, Ontario and offshore of Nfld. There are also reserves in the High Arctic but at this time it is uneconomical to move them South.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Canadian Oil was first discovered in small amounts in and around Petroleum Ontario. Out West, the first Well was "spudded in" in what is now Waterton International Peace Park in the Southwestern corner of Alberta. This well was soon abandoned as not of commercial value.
In Turner Valley, just South of Calgary, the Dingham #1 blew in with a bang in the 1920s. The Alberta Oil Boom had begun. Turner Valley soon became known as "Little Chicago" and an adjacent town, Black Diamond, was developed. It was said that "if you couldn't get it in Turner Valley or Black Diamond, it did not exist." From Alcohol to Whores and on to Zippers, you could learn your ABCs in these wide-open Oil towns. You could also lose your shirt or life and many did!
Oil is still being produced from those geological strata even today, but there is a problem. In the early days only oil was wanted, so they flared off millions of cubic feet of natural gas. These gas flares lit the skies for miles around and seriously relieved the pressure needed to drive the oil up the pipes to the surface. It is estimated that only one third of the oil in the Turner Valley Oil Field has been recovered due to the loss of gas pressure caused by flaring.
