"One of the keys to improving U.S. - Canada relations is through non-governmental organizations like the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region and through private sector involvement. Relationships in this framework are based on economic self-interest that will more readily endure politics. The more familiar"friendships" tend to invest in high-result, low-cost, constructive engagements and have been shown to successfully bring the real positions and facts to the forefront of "disputes"."

Edmonton, Alberta Canada
The city of Edmonton
Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta. The city is located in central Alberta. At the latitude of 53 degrees north, Edmonton is one of the most northermost major cities in the world. Here are some tidbits about Edmonton:
  • The population of Edmonton's metropolitan region is just less than a million, making it about the same size as the greater Nashville area. In fact, Edmonton was named Nashville's sister city in 1990. Edmonton is Canada's fifth largest city, and the largest Canadian city between Toronto and Vancouver.
  • Edmonton covers an area of 259 square miles (670 sq km), and the metropolitan area covers 3682 square miles (9537 sq km).
  • Edmonton's beginnings came as Fort Edmonton, a trading post founded by the Hudson Bay Company in 1795. The Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 began the city's growth...the city was the last supply center for those traveling to find their riches. Another time of expansion came when oil was discovered in the area in 1947.

(the old and the new) Calgary, city on the Bow River in southern Alberta, Canada, at the entrance to a major route across the Rocky Mountains. Calgary is known as the Energy Capital of Canada because a number of oil companies have headquarters in the city. It is one of the country's most important business centers. The surrounding region produces wheat, beef cattle, and natural gas, while the nearby mountains draw many tourists. The mountains also cause Calgary's climate to be rather dry. It has only 399 mm (15.7 in) of precipitation per year. Summers are pleasantly mild, with an average daily July temperature range from 10° to 23° C (49° to 74° F). Winters are long and cold, with an average daily January temperature range from -16° to -4° C (4° to 26° F), but are relieved by frequent warm winds called chinooks. Calgary's Chinatown Calgary has the most striking setting of all of Canada's prairie cities. It lies at the very edge of the high plains, where they rise into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on a site deeply carved by the Bow and Elbow rivers. The city proper covers a land area of 717 sq km (277 sq mi), and the entire metropolitan area has a land area of 5083 sq km (1963 sq mi).
The river valleys are natural corridors for roads and railways and have had a strong influence on Calgary's layout. In the eastern sector of the city the valleys are largely used for industry, but elsewhere they provide attractive sites for homes, parks, and recreation facilities. These include Heritage Park, a reconstructed pioneer village; Canada Olympic Park, which was built for the Winter Olympics in 1988; and the Calgary Zoo, with its botanical garden and its Prehistoric Park, which displays life-size models of the dinosaurs that once lived in Alberta.

Only five Canadian provinces have counties: Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Price Edward Island). British Columbia has Regional districts. While working on NAVA's Canadian municipal flags project, this caused confusion in at least one case: Alberta has some "counties", though these are large rural municipalities, not another level of administration. The situation is indeed less complex in other provinces, because Quebec is the largest, second most populated province, has vast northern territories, and has the oldest settlement history.
