NEW DEAL FOR CITIES AND COMMUNITIES EDMONTON, Alberta, May 14 The Government of Alberta's Budget 2005 provides municipalities with $600 million in each of the next five years through the Alberta Municipal Infrastructure Program. Alberta municipalities will also receive $400 million more each year through other, existing provincial infrastructure grant programs. That means municipalities will receive a total of $1 billion a year from the province for municipal infrastructure priorities. This is the second gas tax deal to be signed, following an agreement with British Columbia and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities on April 15. In the coming weeks, the Government of Canada will be signing a series of agreements from coast to coast to coast. For more information: Mark Rus

Federal Government Partners with Communities to Implement the Urban Aboriginal Strategy
Through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), the Government of Canada is investing $3.36 million in UAS funding to Edmonton, which is being administered through the community-based Edmonton Housing Trust Fund (EHTF). In Calgary, $3.28 million is being delivered through a community-driven initiative called the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Initiative (CUAI). In Lethbridge, $950,000 in UAS funds will be delivered through the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge, a local community entity. Provincial government departments will use existing program funds to partner on specific UAS pilot projects and capacity building initiatives. The UAS approach recognizes that governments and the communities they serve need to work together to address urban Aboriginal issues. It also recognizes that local communities are best placed to develop local solutions that meet their unique challenges and needs, which is why a city-specific approach to implementation is being taken in each of the three cities. Examples of community priorities currently being addressed in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge via pilot projects and capacity building include improving housing, childcare, overall health and nutrition, education, employment training, and transition assistance into urban living. The Urban Aboriginal Strategy in these three cities is intended to test new ideas on how to better respond, through partnership, to the local needs of urban Aboriginal people. Through these initiatives, federal and provincial officials will work with community and Aboriginal organizations to co-develop innovative solutions to address local priorities that cannot be undertaken through existing programs. The lessons learned from these pilot projects will help the Government of Canada determine how to address urban Aboriginal issues in the longer term.

How ALBERTA got its name.
The district of Alberta was created in 1882, and enlarged to become a province of Canada on September 1, 1905. The name was suggested by the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, in honour of his wife, H.R.H. Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. EDMONTON Name taken from Fort Edmonton, built in 1795 farther down the North Saskatchewan River than the present city. The fort was destroyed in 1807, but was relocated within the site of the present city limits by the Hudson's Bay Company some time before 1819. The fort is reputed to have been named by William Tomison for Edmonton, now part of metropolitan London, England, in honour of the birthplace of John Peter Pruden, a clerk of the Hudson's Bay Company. Bed and Breakfast - Edmonton
With your stay at one of Edmonton's excellent bed and breakfast accommodations, you'll find various activities to keep you busy. Take in the scenery and then do a little sight seeing and shopping. Edmonton's bed and breakfast accommodations are in the heart of Alberta's culture.
Finding Edmonton Accommodation - Inns
You can view our online Edmonton Bed and Breakfast accommodation listings or purchase the Canadian Bed and Breakfast Guide , a printed directory of bed and breakfast accommodations across Canada, including Canadian inns. It was established in 1982 by Gerda Pantel and is now produced by Marybeth and Jay Moyer, Enjoying Niagara Inc. It is an ideal trip planner for travel in Canada. The Guide started as, and remains, the only national printed guide to Bed and Breakfasts in Canada. Bed and Breakfast lodgings in the book are listed with picture and extensive descriptions which includes information on: rooms, breakfasts, amenities, things to do, price, means of payment, how to locate them, etc.
Selecting your Bed and Breakfast Accommodation
In choosing bed and breakfast accommodation it is recommended that you look at the descriptive details of the bed and breakfasts in the area in which you will be staying. There will in most cases be a choice of options that will cover the needs and value preferences of prospective bed and breakfast guests. It is best to book ahead and while this can frequently be done by e-mail, calling by phone is not a bad option. It gives you a chance to speak to the host, ask some questions that may not have been answered for you in the listing, and to get a feel for the reception you can expect.
