Living in Calgary
Back to Human Resources “With a diversified, international economy, Calgary is the ‘new West.’” – former Mayor Al Duerr The City of Calgary is located in southwestern Alberta in the shadow of the majestic Rocky Mountains.  Its proximity to this world-renowned mountain range, more than 2,300 hours of sunlight per year, and the regular influx of chinooks – a sudden influx of warm Pacific air during the winter months – make Calgary a chosen destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Calgary is Canada’s sixth largest city with a metropolitan population of just under 900,000.  As Canada’s energy capital, and western Canada’s business capital, Calgary is home to the second largest concentration of corporate head offices in the nation.  Due to its geographic location, Calgary has developed into a major distribution hub for goods and services throughout western Canada and the Pacific Northwest region. Calgary’s economy has been primarily shaped by the resource sector but it also boasts a high concentration of manufacturing and high technology industries.  Its industrial base includes energy, agriculture, manufacturing, research and development, advanced technology and tourism.  Calgary is the wireless technology centre of Canada and with more than 4,000 people employed in this sector.  Consumer spending remains high in Calgary and retail space activity is a prominent factor in Calgary’s economic growth.

Living in Edmonton
Back to Human Resources

“A great place to live, visit and do business.” – Mayor Bill Smith The City of Edmonton is the political and intellectual capital of Canada’s province of Alberta.  Edmonton is Canada’s fifth largest city, with a metropolitan population of just over 900,000, and is the largest metropolitan centre between Toronto and Vancouver.  The International Development Research Committee listed Edmonton as Canada’s only Smart City.  It was cited for creating an environment that fosters creativity and knowledge-based business and research by bringing together various post-secondary institutions, research organizations, business and government.  Alberta’s oil production industry is based in Edmonton and the city is home to some of the largest petroleum refineries in Canada.  Metro Edmonton is the hub of western Canada’s oil and gas pipeline network, the supply and service centre for Canada’s petroleum industry, and the mining and forestry industry in Alberta and northern Canada. Edmonton’s economy was judged the most diverse in Canada, according to the Conference Board of Canada’s Metropolitan Outlook Winter 2000 report, because of its balance of employment throughout primary industries, value-added production, trade, services, and public administration.  Balanced employment across a variety of industries indicates a stable and diversified economy.  (Diversity of economy was calculated based upon Canada as a whole as the base for the diversification index.)  The Dominion Bond Rating Service Ltd. of Toronto and the Canadian Bond Rating Service both assigned Edmonton a Double AA bond rating, recognizing Edmonton’s record of good financial management, diverse economy and low municipal tax rates.

Canada Day
Canada Day 2005 was a great opportunity for communities, towns and cities across Alberta to celebrate both the nation’s and the province’s birthday in a big way. At the provincial legislature, food, fun and festivities were featured on the grounds and in the pedway. Tour guides dressed in 1905 costume were there to greet people and highlight a century of Alberta tradition and Alberta Centennial Ambassadors were on site to help spread the Centennial spirit. Kids of all ages enjoyed the Canada Day carnival that took place near the wading pools. A pancake breakfast, dance and music ensembles, as well as face painting, balloon creations and various games entertained visitors on the grounds. Draws for free passes to various Edmonton attractions or a Centennial Picnic Pak were a part of the celebrations. See all the details on the Legislature Assembly website There are also hundres of events on the  centennial on-line events calendar for more ideas on how you can participate in your community or a community near you.

Sacred Heart Community Collective In 2003 the Council became the coordinating agency in the Sacred Heart Community Collective and in November of that year the Council moved its office to the former Sacred Heart School. The Council leases a large amount of office space from Edmonton Catholic Schools, and subleases much of it, at low cost, to the other non-profit agencies in the Collective. The Council also provides support in terms of joint use of office equipment and liaison with Edmonton Catholic School on behalf of all of the agencies. The Council further facilitates the use of the gymnasium, kitchen and two meeting rooms at the school by community agencies. Space for recreational programming, community celebrations, and business meetings is provided free of charge to non-profit community groups that would otherwise have no access to an appropriate facility. With the support and cooperation of Edmonton Catholic Schools, the facilities are used almost to capacity.

Edmonton is more famous for it being the home of the West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in the world, with over 800 stores and services. The WEM is located in the city's west end, and it seems all freeways point in its direction. The mall has the world's largest parking lot, indoor wave pool, indoor waterslide, indoor rollercoaster, indoor navy (4 submarines and a couple of boats), to name a few "world's bests." There's even a hotel in the Mall, as well as its own nightlife district (Bourbon Street) to make shopping even easier.

    Trail Canada Guide to Alberta
Where the Prairies meet the Rocky Mountains Only in the past hundred years has Alberta seen people settle, before that the province was primarily uninhabited wilderness. Today, Alberta is home to two of Canada's largest cities and is covered by huge wheat fields, cattle ranches and mineral and fossil fuel mines. Alberta sits on the western side of the Prairies, and the Rocky Mountains rise from the flat lands on the west of the province. Calgary is home to many of Canada's national corporations, second only to Toronto. The office lined streets are ranked as the cleanest in the world. The southern city's rising population of over 800,000 people draws in the tourists from across the world. Banff and the Rocky Mountains are visible to the west of the city. Edmonton is spread out along the winding North Saskatchewan River and attracts tourists due to its proximity to Jasper and the Rockies. Despite many of the city's attractions and points of interest, the most famous part to Edmonton is the West Edmonton Mall, the world's largest mall, and it is massive! The mall covers over 48 hectares and contains nearly 1000 stores and many other attractions such as a huge water park, amusement parks, Deep Sea environments, themed streets and so much more.

      Alberta cities lose Kyoto fight
      Calgary split emerges during debate
      By Grady Semmens
      Calgary Herald
      June 2, 2002
It was far from a united voice, but Alberta communities were virtually the lone opponents of the Kyoto Protocol in a prickly debate Saturday that saw some opponents to the plan suffer the slings and arrows of their colleagues in civic governments across the country. And with a groundswell of support for the controversial greenhouse gas reduction plan known from the outset, it kept some council members, including Calgary's mayor, from going to bat on the issue. "They actually booed me," Ald. Ric McIver said, chuckling as he left Saturday's discussion. "They feel good because they voted for it, but it's meaningless unless it's done right." The membership of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, which represents about 1,000 cities, towns and villages from across the country, voted overwhelmingly to call for Ottawa to ratify Kyoto, as long as it includes several "made in Canada" conditions ensuring provinces don't suffer economic ruin. The 1997 Kyoto protocol calls for the industrialized countries that signed the agreement to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to six per cent less than they produced in 1990 by 2012.

Alberta: A Great Place to Live
There are so many reasons why people find living in Alberta such a satisfying experience. Some are attracted by the mix of cosmopolitan cities and rural towns and villages. Others arrive to experience the Rocky Mountains or golden prairie wheat fields - and never want to leave. Alberta has stunning scenery, low crime, and clean air and water. Alberta's population is on an upswing and deciding where to set up residence takes some consideration. Some centers are known for their arts and culture, others for recreation opportunities, or sport facilities. Wherever you decide to live, Alberta's cities and towns have unique qualities to captivate you. Alberta's rural areas are equally attractive, offering easy access to the province's natural areas. Long known as Canada's 'energy province', Alberta has more than 60% of the country's reserves of conventional crude oil, 85% of its natural gas, 63% of its coal and all of its heavy oil and oil sands reserves. Alberta's strong economic foundation was built on oil and gas, agriculture, forestry and tourism. People from across Canada and from all over the world have made their home in Alberta, resulting in a dynamic, multicultural and energetic province where international business thrives.

Time to think big on Alberta's cities to think big More money alone won't cure our urban ills By Dr. Roger Gibbins Calgary Sun Canadians have witnessed an energetic debate over the past several years on the "urban agenda." This debate reflects the growing impact of urban regions on the country's economic and social prosperity, and much of it has centred on the role that the federal government should play in urban affairs.
