Kosovo Albanians bury clash victims
Peace efforts under way
March 3, 1998 Web posted at: 2:43 p.m. EST (1943 GMT) PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (CNN) Thousands of ethnic Albanians in the Serbian province of Kosovo evaded police roadblocks on Tuesday and attended the funerals of some of the 21 people killed in anti-government demonstrations over the weekend. Tens of thousands of people flashed the V for victory sign as nine bodies were brought to the funeral site, near the central Kosovo village of Cirez. Twenty-one graves were dug, but with heavily armed Serbian police blocking main roads to the village, some vehicles with bodies apparently did not make it to Cirez, 40 kilometers (23 miles) west of Kosovo's capital Pristina. Earlier news reports had suggested that thousands of ethnic Albanians had been prevented from attending the funerals, which had also taken place in Likosane. Both Likosane and Quirez are said to be strongholds of ethnic Albanians, who form about 90 percent of the population in Kosovo and have been intensifying their campaign for sovereignty ever since Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic revoked the province's autonomy status in 1989.

Report: Serb police attack ethnic Albanians in Kosovo
March 5, 1998 Web posted at: 9:54 a.m. EST (1454 GMT) In this story: PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (CNN) Serb police who came under attack reportedly struck back in force against ethnic Albanians in Serbia's troubled Kosovo province Thursday. The region's latest violence came as British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook was delivering a stern message to Yugoslav leaders in Belgrade. Serbia is a republic within what's left of the splintered Yugoslavia. Kosovo is a province within Serbia where ethnic Albanians outnumber Serbs nine to one. Most Kosovo residents favor secession from Serbia, which has established a massive police and military presence in the province. Cook, representing the European Union, planned to urge Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to hold peace talks with Kosovo Albanians demanding independence for their province. A political solution is needed, Cook told CNN on Thursday. (

Norwegian Foreign Minister Knut Vollebaek, head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), said "without reconciliation, there is little hope of establishing a new and democratic Kosovo." Meanwhile, an official of the Socialist party of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was quoted Thursday as saying hostile acts against Serbs show the need for the return of Yugoslav troops to Kosovo.

Ethnic Albanians query unity deal
By Altin Raxhimi and Avni Zogiani TIRANA, Albania and PRISTINA, Kosovo Ethnic Albanians in Albania, as well as those in Kosovo, mostly support their ethnic kin in the recent fighting in Macedonia. But despite feelings of sympathy, most ethnic Albanians do not take notions of uniting the Albanian people seriously. Ethnic Albanians in Macedonia and in Kosovo shared the same state for seven decades until Yugoslavia broke up in 1991 they shared the same religion, the same language, and many of the same traditions. There were many marriages across the border uniting families and clans. Most of the ethnic Albanian political elite in Macedonia studied in Kosovo, at what was then the only Albanian-language university in former Yugoslavia, in Pristina. When the conflict started in Macedonia in March, in the northern village of Tanusevci on the Kosovo border, many in Pristina talked about the close link between them and the village across the border.

Kosovo Albanians a no-show at Thursday's talks
Serb offer of negotiations termed 'farce'
In This Story: March 12, 1998 Web posted at: 10:35 p.m. EST (0335 GMT) PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (CNN) Serbian officials have scheduled more talks Friday with ethnic Albanians in Kosovo after the Kosovars refused to attend a session set up Thursday by the Serbs. But Albanian leaders indicated they were unlikely to show up Friday either, because Serbian officials were offering no prospect of compromise on the key Albanian demand for independence. Indeed, Serbia's deputy premier, Ratko Markovic, who came to the Kosovo capital of Pristina for Thursday's talks, made it clear that "independence for Kosovo and its huge ethnic Albanian majority would be out of the question." Kosovar student leaders said they and their supporters would take to the streets of Pristina Friday afternoon.
