It is the largest city and the chief industrial and cultural center of the country. TiranE is located on a fertile plain that yields a variety of agricultural products. Its manufactures include metal products, agricultural machinery, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and foodstuffs. After 1990 (the end of Communist rule), new industries sprang up in scattered locations around the city. Lignite is mined nearby. A railroad and highway link TiranE with the port city of DurrEs, its chief outlet. The center of the city is Scanderbeg Square, with the government buildings and the 18th-century mosque of Etchem Bey. The bazaar and the mosque of Sulayman Pasha are nearby. The city has a university (founded 1957) and the institute of sciences of Albania. The population of TiranE is mostly Muslim. Hoxha was proclaimed there. In the early 1990s, TiranE was rocked by massive and often violent demonstrations that forced the Communist government to institute substantial political and economic reforms.

The Albanians' fear that the lands they inhabited would be partitioned among Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece fueled the rise of Albanian nationalism. The first postwar treaty, the abortive Treaty of San Stefano (see Glossary) signed on March 3, 1878, assigned Albanian-populated lands to Serbia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. Austria-Hungary and Britain blocked the arrangement because it awarded Russia a predominant position in the Balkans and thereby upset the European balance of power. A peace conference to settle the dispute was held later in the year in Berlin. At first the Ottoman authorities supported the Prizren League, but the Sublime Porte pressed the delegates to declare themselves to be first and foremost Ottomans rather than Albanians. Some delegates supported this position and advocated emphasizing Muslim solidarity and the defense of Muslim lands, including present-day Bosnia and Hercegovina. Other representatives, under Frasheri's leadership, focused on working toward Albanian autonomy and creating a sense of Albanian identity that would cut across religious and tribal lines. Because conservative Muslims constituted a majority of the representatives, the Prizren League supported maintenance of Ottoman suzerainty.

Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History Lecture 1: Geography and ethnic geography of the Balkans to 1500 Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography. Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan. For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland. This success derives from the nature of the research environments into which we situate our DPhil students and from close individual supervision. You will be registered with both an interdisciplinary Graduate Research Centre (GRC) and with Geography. Between these two centres you are provided with the resources such as office space, lab equipment, computing tools, specialist seminars and so on, to enable you successfully to complete your degree. In addition, and dependent upon your own experience and qualifications, we offer a range of training courses in research skills and techniques. Eligibility To register for a DPhil at Sussex you must have a 'recognised' Masters qualification. Generally this means that your MA or MSc should be a course that is, or was at the time of your graduation, recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as an appropriate Research Training degree. In the case of overseas qualifications, we require an equivalent status and applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you do not have a recognised Masters level qualification then you will probably be asked to register on our MSc Social Research Methods (Human Geography) which is recognised for ESRC funding on a '1+3' basis - that's 1 year MSc and 3 years DPhil. This is the only option for you should you be seeking an ESRC award to support your studies. GEOGRAPHY Albania Table of Contents National Boundaries Albania, with a total area of 28,750 square kilometers, is slightly larger than the state of Maryland. It shares a 287- kilometer border with the Yugoslav republics of Montenegro and Serbia to the north, a 151-kilometer border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the north and east, and a 282- kilometer border with Greece to the south and southeast. Its coastline is 362 kilometers long. The lowlands of the west face the Adriatic Sea and the strategically important Strait of Otranto, which puts less than 100 kilometers of water between Albania and the heel of the Italian "boot." The distinct ethnic character of the Albanian people and their isolation within a generally definable area underscored their demands for independence in the early twentieth century. In some places, however, the mingling of different ethnic groups complicated the determination of national borders. Kosovo, across the northeastern Albanian border, was a Serbian-governed province, although ethnic Albanians made up over 90 percent of its population. Many Albanians still regarded Kosovo's status as an issue. Greeks and Albanians lived in the mountains on both sides of the southeastern Albanian boundary. Neither Greece nor Albania was satisfied with the division of nations effected by their common border.
