Visit to Rome for the Beatification of Mother Teresa
The Mass took place outside, and it was rumoured that in keeping with her example, the best seats had been reserved for some of the poorest in the city, who had been collected off the streets early in the morning. Everyone else had to stand. Communion was available for everyone present from the hundreds of priests in white who spread through the crowds, each with a white umbrella carried by an assistant. The Pope was there throughout, taking the Mass for her beatification, and although clearly frail and sometimes unintelligible, he still made a circuit through the ecstatic crowds in an open car. In the warm evening, thousands gathered again in the Square for a firework display. The Square and the Vatican buildings went completely silent and dark, and then out of the blackness, one window at the top of the building was suddenly illuminated to show the Pope seated to watch the display. The crowd gasped, then cheered and clapped. This dramatic moment was followed by a spectacular display of fireworks accompanied by music. It was a great day for Albanians.

Albanian literature history:
The internal and external history of Albanians has left its deep imprint on their culture.
Albania, part of the ancient Illyrian territories, a cross-road of civilisations and geopolitical interests during the barbaric onslaughts and later on a province of the Eastern and Western Empires, Rome and Byzantium, after, over centuries, having constituted and dissolved independent despotisms and principates, and after having eventually constituted the state of Scanderbeg .
The resistance in the cultural field was first of all expressed through the elaboration of the Albanian language in the area of church texts and publications, mainly of the Catholic confessional region in the North, but also of the Orthodox in the South.
The Protestant reform invigorated hopes for the development of the local language and literary tradition when priest Gj. Buzuku brought into the Albanian language the Catholic liturgy, trying to do for the Albanian what Luther did for the German language.
The "Missal" by Gj. Buzuku, published by him in 1555, is considered to date as the first work of written Albanian. The refined level of the language and the stabilised orthography must be a result of an earlier tradition of writing Albanian, a tradition that is not known. But there are some fragmented evidence, dating earlier than Buzuku, which indicate that Albanian was written at least since 14th century AD:

Swiss support Albanian culture Swiss News July, 2002 As Albania slowly reclaims its cultural heritage after half-a-century of Communism, Switzerland is helping in the process. Over the past three years Pro Helvetia, the Swiss arts council, has encouraged Albanian cultural activities. Regarded as one of Europe's poorest countries, Albania saw virtually no cultural development during its Communist isolation. Since the Communist era ended a decade ago, economic difficulties have put artistic ventures low on the government's list of priorities. "When I see all the poverty here, I do sometimes think that culture is a luxury," says Christian Zindel, director of Pro Helvetia in Albania. "But without culture you ... Introduction of Albanian Influence
The Illyrian Leaders
The ancient Albanian civilization of Illiricum went under the influence of the Roman Empire during the reign of Ceaser, or around 30 B.C. Becoming conquered by the Roman Empire really had no meaning to Illyrians before and certainly not after they became members of Ancient Rome, for Ceaser himself claimed lineage to the ancient Aeneas. And according to Aeneas, an important stop was made in modern day Albania where a colony of his men was established. So in a way, Ceaser was only taking over his own people if the legend proved true. Yet, whatever circumstances lead to the conquering of Illiricum, the explosion of its influence on the Empire after this event is evident in the towering greatness that was Rome. Rome accepts many leaders as being native Illyrians, or a barbarian, uncultured sort who prevailed only due to their warlike upbringing. Extraordinary how these "uncultured people" defined the Roman Empire, and later the Byzantine Empire, for nearly a millennium.

The Albanian American Women's Organization (AAWO) works to lift the spirit, status and voice of Albanian women and girls so they can fully participate in all aspects of life, by becoming stronger, and more resilient, in overcoming the years of war, government oppression and tradition that have pushed them down and to the margins of society. AAWO hopes to strengthen the bonds between Albanian American women and their sisters all over the world. We believe and cherish that all human beings in this world, regardless of gender, race, nation, or religion deserve an equal opportunity in life... There is a need felt to give a voice to young Albanian women and youth and to listen and learn about their struggles and their ideas for a better future. Therefore AAWO explores the role of women and young people also in creating "a culture of peace," during their integration into the American mainstream society.
Envisioned Future
Fifty years from now we hope to become a nest of Albanian culture and tradition; and we hope to become a role model for all women who wish reach for the excellence. We will become a place of hospitality, creativity and culture where everyone will feel inspired, motivated, engaged and creative. We will become a place called home for all women who seek to belong. Community / Information - as we help women and their families heal; and restore and rebuild their lives.
