ARCHAEOLOGY By Prof. MUZAFER KORKUTI The Illyrians History: Written sources from ancient authors have it that western Balkan regions since ancient times were inhabited by the Illyrians, one of the largest people of the peninsula. Such interpretation of sources can also be backed up by archaeological, linguistic and anthropologic data, which might as well add to the conclusion that the Illyrians were a very ancient and autochthonous population that was formed in a very long historic and cultural process during both the bronze and iron ages (the second millennium BC). Sources of Illyrian tribes may be found in the earliest works of the Hellenic literature in both Homer and Hesiod’s poems. The Greek writers' interest about Illyria and Illyrians grew soon after the first Hellenic colonies settled in the eastern Adriatic coast such as Dyrrachium, Apollonia and Orichon during the 7th to 6th centuries BC. The close links that these cities kept with the metropolis and the continuous visits by both Greek travellers and merchants in order to become acquainted and make deals in both rich minerals and agricultural and dairy products of Illyria, helped the Greek world acquire full and exact knowledge of Illyrians, and such firm data be may easily found across the well-known works of the historians of the ancient world, such as Herodotus and, particularly, Thucydides.

How the Goddess lost her head: the myth and reality of the looting of Butrint
Institute of World Archaeology

A recurrent theme of popular folklore concerning foreign archaeological missions working in the Mediterranean is the illegal removal of finds. Stories of this kind range from the true exploits of larger-than-life characters such as Lord Elgin and his assistants in Greece (St Clair 1998) and Giovanni Belzoni in Egypt (Trigger 1989), through to the activities of well-constituted scientific missions of the 1920s and 30s. In many cases the archaeologists concerned have not helped themselves in this matter. Sir Leonard Woolley, for example, filled his books with a series of stories of how he managed to hoodwink the Italian and Turkish authorities and make off with choice pieces (Woolley 1954; 1962). The end of colonialism and the politicization of the past have reinforced this idea in the modern era. Many of the archaeologists of the past are seen as opposing in some fashion the establishment of local national identities; thus, for example, Elgin is demonized in Greece. In the mind of the general public of those countries actually involved in acquisition this concept has also taken root. Witness the activities of Indiana Jones in securing antiquities for his clients. Obviously each case must be taken on its own merits. Here I intend to examine the Butrint sculptures from Albania. This is an instance where the myth has obscured the unpleasant reality, and as a consequence has deflected attention from the present sad situation of theft from museums and archaeological sites.

In particular, the rise of urbanism in the form of fortified hilltop citadels, several of which are visible in the area, is preceded by the construction of burial mounds in use over several centuries, and the directors shared an interest in examining more closely this social and historical transition from scattered burials to centralized forts. With the support of the Steinmetz Chair for Classical Arch-aeology and Material Culture, and the participation of four UCLA graduate students assisted by the Friends of Archaeology, our team assembled at the site of ancient Apollonia on June 19, 2004, set up data points the next day, and began clearing the mound for excavation on Monday June 21, 2004.
The Patos tumulus, containing 78 graves, led us to expect a similar number of wealthy burials of the Early Iron Age, and we were not disappointed. Six weeks of hard work uncovered 28 burials, including a cluster of early modern graves, notably of infants and with inhumed animals, and we were rewarded with some spectacular finds of the Early Iron Age.
The Kress Foundation and the Mellon Foundation enabled the participation of two conservators who not only handled a steady stream of artifacts but also repaired older finds from the Patos tumulus, and helped inspire interest in Albania in the new UCLA-Getty MA program in Archaeological Conservation. Finally, the Harry Wellcome Biomolecules Center at Oxford joined us with a team member investigating problems of contamination of ancient DNA material. The end of our first season brought us not quite halfway through this rich site, with enough material for a preliminary report and several thesis topics, and we are already planning our second season in the field for Summer 2005. All team members agreed that the most rewarding experience of our first season was a satisfying and enjoyable collaboration with Albanian colleagues and students.

Archaeologists Peel Away More Layers of Butrint
By David Chanatry Special to The Washington Post Monday, July 18, 2005; Page A05 BUTRINT, Albania More than 2,000 years after Julius Caesar came here for provisions and decided to start a veterans colony, a new army has invaded a multinational force of archaeologists in what is perhaps the largest ongoing dig in the Mediterranean. Led by Professor Richard Hodges of the University of East Anglia in England, 100 archaeologists from 19 nations, 60 Albanian undergraduates and dozens of local laborers are rotating in over the course of this summer's two-month digging season. The scientific goal of this decade-long project is to learn how society was transformed at the end of the classical period of ancient Greece and Rome, but the city of Butrint is as much of an attraction. Over the course of 3,000 years, successive civilizations made this city their own. "It became a place in the middle of the Mediterranean where everybody came," Hodges said.

Impressive remnants from a synagogue dating from the 5th or 6th century, C.E., have been revealed in the city of Saranda, a coastal city in Albania, opposite the Greek island of Corfu. Initial excavations at the site were conducted some 20 years ago when Albania was under tight Communist rule. The existence of the ancient synagogue has now come to light as the result of an invitation from the Archaeology Institute of the Albanian Academy of Sciences, asking the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology to participate in a joint excavation and study project at the site. Working in the past few weeks there have been Professors Ehud Netzer and Gideon Foerster of the Hebrew University, together with Albanian archaeologists Kosta Lako and Etleva Nalbani. The synagogue that has been uncovered underwent various periods of use, including its conversion into a church at its last stage. Particularly noteworthy among the finds are two mosaic pavements.

Like the literature native to Albania, Albanian folk music often contains themes of honor, loyalty, and courage. Styles range from the heroic songs of the mountains to the more musically complex lieder (a type of ballad), which is accompanied by instruments and common in the south. The most common traditional instrument is the lahute (lute), which is similar to the Slavic gusle. Also in the south

The fact that Kosovo Polje belonged to the Serbian State in the IX-X cent. has been most obviously archaeologically proved by the most ancient Serbian and Slav administrative testimony found at the Cecan fortification near Vucitrn. It is a shard of a jug used for the payment of taxes in wine, marked to a volume of six measuring units, denoted by means of notches and Glagolitic letters (G. Tomovic, Inscription glagolitique de Cecan, Revue historique, XXXVII, Institut d'histoure, Belgrade 1990, pp 19). Cecan was probably conquered by the emperor Samoil in his war against Serbia in cca. 988, when the Serbian duke Jovan Vladimir, the saint whose reliques have been preserved in the Orthodox temple at Elbasan, Albania, was taken prisoner. As far as is known, from among all the Serbian areas, apart from those of Montenegro and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Metohia is the one with the greatest number of churches that have been in continuous use for over a thousand years. The temples and churches founded in the VI-VII cent. and/or in the IX-XI cent., for instance those at Lipljan, Gracanica, Bogorodica Ljeviska at Prizren, and others, are still there; Turkish and Austrian devastations in the XVI and the XVII cent. have left the remains of Banjska, near Kosovska Mitrovica, of Studenica Hvostanska, near Pec, of Arhandjeli Prizrenski, etc.
