Greek treasures easy prey for antiquities traffickers
Authorities in 2005 have so far retrieved 253 ancient objects, two icons and 12 extremely valuable ecclesiastical items.
The net profits that come from the international trade in antiquities are akin to those of human and narcotics trafficking.
Organized crime networks legalize revenues from illegal activities by purchasing antiquities, while professional dealers in illegal antiquities arm themselves with cutting-edge technology to locate artifacts buried deep in the ground. On the Internet, meanwhile, an endless number of sites hold non-stop “auctions” of items that can date as far back as the sixth century BC.
Shipwrecks
At the same time, unprotected from the greedy hands of antiquities traffickers, tens of thousands of priceless ancient objects are lying on the Greek seabed, there for the taking. It is estimated that there are over 12,000 shipwrecks around the country and, according to officers of the Department of Antiquities Trafficking, the majority of them are easy prey for antiquities smugglers from all over Europe and the United States.

None of this would have been possible without the moral and financial backing of so many individuals and organisations that have worked with the Butrint Foundation in 2002 or have encouraged us in our work. In particular thanks must go to the Packard Humanities Institute, which has been our partner in the Butrint project for more than 4 years. AIMS
The Butrint Foundation was set up by Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury in 1993 as a charitable trust. Its principle objective is to restore and preserve the Butrint site in southern Albania for the benefit of the general public.
OTHER OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:
All these have impinged on Butrint and on the work of the Butrint Foundation. Without the support of the Butrint Foundation, without our persistent advocacy of the cause of conservation, and without the effort to mobilise international interest in Butrint, the site might by now have been abandoned to the rampant vegetation, its monuments looted and the area built over. That Butrint today remains one of the great unspoiled sites of the Eastern Mediterranean is important for Albania and a source of pride for our foundation.

Reviewed by Barry Baldwin, University of Calgary. As the subtitle discloses, this portly volume is both conference record and Festschrift, the star of the show being the veteran expert in Greek vases Arthur Dale Trendall, appearing here as both honorand and participant. Like many another epic, this brobdingnagian production has been long in the making. The conference itself was held in July, 1985. Descoeudres' prefatory acknowledgements are dated October, 1987. The book itself appeared late in 1990. Habent sua fata libelli. After lists of contents, plates, abbreviations, and contributors, running in all to 38 pages, Descoeudres kicks things off with an editorial introduction-cum-synthesis that I suppose might have gone down better after a few jars of good Aussie beer. It seemed to myself both silly and superfluous. The opening sentence is preposterous: "When, back in September 1983, the plan was launched to mount an archaeological congress at the University of Sydney on the theme 'Greek Colonists and Native Populations', it aroused bewilderment both in Australia and overseas." Ironically, a good demonstration of colonial mentality. Why on earth, in these days of jet travel and fax machines, should anyone be bewildered by the prospect of an academic conference on any subject in Australia? No such emotions are expressed by Graeme Clark, Deputy Director of the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University and also associated with the volume under review, in his preface to

The Italian Archaeological Mission to Albania
The origins of the Italian Archaeological Mission to Albania were rooted in the political crisis that existed in the region immediately prior to the First World War. At this time, various powers with an interest in the post-Ottoman Balkans were vying for control over the newly-defined Albanian territory. Italy's main political concern was the Albanian port of Vlora, which it perceived as the keystone to control over the Adriatic. Although Albania's borders were later determined by the Ambassadors' Conferences of 1921 (Vickers, 1995:100) instability reigned and in the geopolitical contest that ensued between Greece, Yugoslavia and Italy, cultural activities, particularly archaeology, were viewed as a way of promoting influence within the country (Gilkes and Miraj, 2000: 111).

(Courtesy the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) [LARGER IMAGE] Colorful mosaic pavements and the fifth- or sixth-century A.D. synagogue that housed them were unearthed in the Albanian coastal town of Saranda, opposite the Greek island of Corfu. It is the first time such remains have been found from this region and time period. Albanian archaeologists first discovered remnants of a house of worship 20 years ago during an initial excavation of the site, when Communist prohibition of religion made a more thorough survey difficult. Because the structure had undergone multiple uses throughout the centuriesmost recently as a Christian churchthe synagogue remained well hidden for years. When further excavations uncovered evidence of the structure's Jewish past, the Archaeology Institute of the Albanian Academy of Sciences teamed up in 2003 with archaeologists from the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology for a joint excavation. The first mosaic pavement depicts items associated with Jewish holidays: a menorah, a citron tree, and a ram's horn. The other, located in the basilica of the synagogue, includes trees, animals, and the facade of a structure that may be a Torah shrine. Future excavations will venture beneath adjacent streets and buildings, where parts of the synagogue remain.

Site of Epidamnus at Durres, Albania (Courtesy of the University of Cincinnati) [LARGER IMAGE] Consider ancient Greece and its ruins, and images of Athens and idyllic little Aegean islands come to mind. Albania, bordering the northwestern corner of Greece, probably does not. Small, poor, and often overlooked, Albania was important to ancient Greece as the region where many successful colonies flourished. Greek archaeological remains piqued the curiosity of excavators as early as the beginning of the nineteenth century, and interest in what lies beneath Albania's soil has only continued to grow since then. When Albania was under Communist rule, the state provided much support for archaeologicalwork. Despite a temporary lapse after the fall of Communism in 1990, today archaeologists from Europe and America are working with their Albanian colleaguesto excavate the country's prehistoric, classical, and later sites. Greeks established colonies in the region between the mid-eighth and mid-sixth centuries B.C. when it was already populated by the
