rogueclassicism quidquid bene dictum est ab ullo, meum est ~ Seneca Albanian Temple From a University of Cincinnati press release (I was scooped by Blogographos on this one!):
It took a hunch, hard work and a heck of a lot of diplomacy. But the payoff is spectacular: Archeologists from the University of Cincinnati have discovered a previously unknown Greek temple outside the ancient Greek city-state of Apollonia.
The monumental temple is "the third of its kind to be discovered at Apollonia and only the fifth in all of Albania," said Jack L. Davis, the Carl W. Blegen Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University of Cincinnati. Davis is co-director of the international team that has located the temple in a rural site in what is now modern-day Albania.
The hunch had its roots in work begun more than 40 years ago, when a farmer’s tractor uncovered terracotta figurines outside the walls of Apollonia. The site appeared to include remains of a sanctuary. An Albanian-Russian archeological team explored it, finding traces of brick walls and dating hundreds of the figurines to the 4th-2nd century BC. Their work went unnoticed, however: the rupture in Soviet-Albanian relations in 1960 kept the team from publishing much about their work
In 2002, Albanian archeologists, working collaboratively with Davis and other UC colleagues, conducted a surface survey. Measuring off a grid in the low-lying land between the ancient walls of Apollonia and the Adriatic Sea, team members walked, painstakingly searching for artifacts hidden in the dirt and vegetation.

Konispol VI (Iron Age) INTRODUCTION Of all the periods of Albanian antiquity, the Stone Age has been the least systematically explored and is the least well understood. Frano Prendi, in his fifty-page Cambridge Ancient History The potential of the Konispol Cave to provide significant evidence for our understanding of the Stone Age environment and economy in southern Albania was clear; it was agreed that the project would turn its attention to questions which had not been asked previously by Albanian archaeologists. Several unanticipatedand, as it turned out, irresolvablelogistical problems related primarily to the unavailability of supplies and equipment in the country in the period immediately following the change in government of 1990-1991 severely hampered our recovery design, but permitted us to plan concretely for the 1993 season. In 1993 we instituted a recovery regime that included screening (half-inch mesh) of all earth removed from the trenches. In addition, under the direction of Dr. Julie Hansen, a regime of water sieving was established.

Michael L. Galaty, Assistant Professor of Anthropolgy, is co-primary investigator for the Mallakastra Regional Archaeological Project in Apollonia, Albania. He is responsibe for organizing field operations for the intensive surface survey of the Apollonia necropolis and surrounding area.
In its April 20 issue, National Geographic highlighted the project, funded in part by the National Geographic Society. The U.S.-Albanian team has found late sixth century B.C. Greek and early third century B.C. Roman ruins, as expected, along with a few things they did not expect. A few thousand things.
We spent the rest of the day helping out, carrying tables and such. We hiked up to the village's reservoir and took a long afternoon siesta. The evening we whiled away, reading and talking and playing with the neighborhood kids.

Antiquities thefts
  • Pre-Columbian artefacts (valued at around $267,700 in 1996) have been stolen from a locked basement store below the Mary Couts Burnett Library In March the British Museum confirmed that a marble hand was stolen from an ancient Greek sculpture in November 2000. The hand, which had been attached with a metal rod to the wall fragment from the Temple of Apollo, Bassae, was said to be worthless separated from the relief. A World Wide Web site ( www. cyrenethefts.org ) has been created to alert the world about the theft of at least 15 stone heads , excavated from the Extramural Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene, Libya between 1969 and 1981 by the Kelsey Museum, University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania Expedition. They were stolen sometime in late 1999 or early 2000 from storerooms used by the Expedition, after thieves broke in through a broken window. The sculptures are of particular archaeological significance, and there is speculation that they were smuggled to Egypt shortly after their theft. All are, thankfully, well-documented and studied, with the publication in press.

Ancient city threatened
By Norman Hammond
THE discovery of a Greek temple in Albania has underlined the threat to the ancient city of Apollonia from development. A new road to the nearby coast, intended to open up the unexploited Adriatic coastline, would cut across former suburbs and divide the temple site from the city ( The Times , April 25, 2005). NI_MPU('middle'); Three courses of ashlar masonry were tied together with T-shaped metal clamps. Since such clamps were used from the 6th century BC onwards, they do not offer a date for the building, but several re-used Hellenistic carvings suggest a date in the late 4th century or later. June GREEK ANTIQUITIES ARE THREATENED IN ALBANIA Posted at EST Greek monuments in ancient Apollonia, Albania are being threatened with destruction because of the construction of a high-speed motorway promoted by the Albanian Transportation Ministry aimed at providing access to the Adriatic coasts for their tourist development at a time when new findings are being unearthed.
Excavation works began 3 years ago under the guidance of Cincinnati University professor Jack Davies and Lorenc Bejko from the Albanian Archaeology International Center who recently announced the discovery of a large ancient Greek temple (7th-4th century BC) possibly dedicated to ancient Greek goddess Artemis.
The region has a great significance for the history of the ancient Greek colonies in the Adriatic and during the past few years Italian, British, French, American and Israeli archaeologists are involved in excavations in Albania in sites with ancient Greek cities and monuments.

TIRANA, Sept 18 (ATA) - Parties of the coalition government of Vlora district backed on Friday the decision of the Albanian parliament to remove the immunity of the Democrat deputy Sali Berisha. "The criminal, putschist, organiser of the crushed armed rebellion deserves an exemplary punishment according to the law," a statement issued by these parties said. Saying that Berisha, during the years of pluralism, swamped the aspiration of the Albanian people for democracy, created his criminal gang whose tentacles extended all over Albania, stressed that the Albanian people and particularly the Vlora people have tragically experienced his anti national activity. "People of Vlora are totally prepared to face successfully the situation and continue their normal life," the statement said. /mima/ak/
