NANCY USERA: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Commonwealth North. And at our board briefing this morning we have with us Gail Phillips who's volunteered to come and talk to us a little bit about the regional learning centers initiative that's going on around the state. I want to give a particular holiday welcome to everybody and wish you all to well for the Thanksgiving and Christmas and other holidays coming up. I thought this morning which is not necessarily a tradition at Commonwealth North, but because we're at a board briefing and we have a reasonable number of people I thought it might be nice to go around and introduce ourselves to one another and just go ahead and why are you here maybe. We'll start with our co-founders or founder. (Members introduce themselves) MS. USERA: Thank you. Well, we all know a lot about each other now. Thank you for that. You guys are a tough audience, I tell you, you can't get anybody to listen up. You have an agenda before you. There is an item entitled board business. To my knowledge, I will ask, we have no board business this morning. Just a few announcements that there is a nominating committee meeting, I believe, Friday morning, Eleanor, isn't that Friday the nominating committee meeting? ELEANOR ANDREWS:

Program takes the job fair to the Bush
By Melissa Campbell
Alaska Journal of Commerce Without leaving their classrooms, about 150 high-school students from a dozen schools statewide saw a presentation from Alaska Vocational Technical Center counselors Tom Sullivan and Rachel James on Feb. 2 as part of a series of career fair events. Students from Buckland, Diomede, Savoonga and other schools saw photos of AVTEC students learning various skills offered through the school. They saw graphics of the cost and time comparisons between vocational schools and colleges. They asked questions about housing opportunities at the school and about the Seward community. No one had to pack a bag or board an airplane. They all simply sat down in front of a television and a little camera in a box. Using the same technology as video conferencing, these virtual career fairs are a relatively new way to use an advancing technology distributed through the Alaska Distance Learning Partnership, formed in 2003 by General Communications Inc. The technology, passed through the airwaves by satellites, has allowed educators like Sullivan and James to visually connect with more students living in the most remote regions of Alaska without having to bust the school's travel budget.
