BCR Staff Preparing for Alaska Library Conference BCR's Rosario Garza, assistant director for Member Services, will again head north to the 2004 Alaska Library Association annual conference March 25-28 in Fairbanks. Garza will present "Uniform Titles: Misunderstood, Underappreciated, But Oh So Useful!" from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. She will talk about how uniform titles can be useful in bibliographic control. However, their purpose is not clear to all library staff, and her presentation is geared at clearing up some of the confusion. BCR Looking Forward to 2003 Alaska Library Conference BCR's Rosario Garza, assistant director for Member Services, is looking forward to the Alaska Library Association 2003 annual conference where she can meet and talk with Alaska librarians. The conference will be held in Juneau March 7-9. Garza will present two programs. "Your Friend MARC" is scheduled from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7. Those attending will get a brief introduction to the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data and learn about its importance in helping librarians create online catalogs that are useful to patrons. During "Making Digital Collections Findable," scheduled for 4-5:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, Garza will talk about digitizing collections, making the collections available on the Internet and how to catalog them. Of particular emphasis will be the standards now used in cataloging online collections. Between programs, Garza will staff BCR's booth in the Exhibit Area. Welcome to the Friends of the Library Homepage! Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries is a non-profit organization that assists the library with special projects. Funds raised by the Friends go toward special gifts and grants to Juneau's three municipal libraries. The group raised over $35,000 for furnishing the downtown library through the sale of the name tiles gracing the upstairs entry way of the Juneau Public Library. Friends operate "The Amazing Bookstore" in the Airport Shopping Center. The bookstore offers secondhand books at bargain prices. All profits go to support the Juneau Public Libraries. Friends also sponsor the annual summer reading program, the annual bookmark contest, and the Authors-to-Juneau series. You can join the group as a supporting member or an active member.
