Alaska Libraries Charging for PC Use
Library Journal - Some Alaska PLs to Charge Out-of-Towners for PC Use Interesting. The library I work at is in a vacation area too with lots of out-of-towners in the summer months. Rather than charging our visitors extra, we try very hard to be convenient for them and treat them the same way as locals. Why? Because in our case, the visitors are often willing to make donations in thanks for our helping make their vacations even nicer. I think that libraries that make it difficult for people to use them end up hurting themselves rather than helping their local people. Yes, we have lines waiting to use the computers in the summer. But we also have happy, friendly people waiting in those lines. Posted by saecker on July 15, 2004 12:30 PM Permalink

Alaska Libraries Years ago, librarians were responsible for nurturing a deep knowledge of informational resources contained within a building, the library. Now, this responsibility extends beyond the walls of a traditional library building. In Programs find out what is happening in libraries and museums throughout Alaska and how librarians and curators are promoting literacy in their communities. In People , you'll meet some of the Alaskan librarians who help us find our way in the information age. In Resources , librarians share information about resources both within the walls of the library and in the giant web of electronic resources found on the Net. We also have a Photo Gallery , which includes historic photographs of some of Alaska's first libraries and entries for the Library of Congress' Beyond Words photography contest. Programs

OCLC and ASL Reach Group Services Agreement
OCLC and the Alaska State Library, on behalf of Alaska's libraries, has completed the long process of putting together a contract designed to move Alaska's libraries to a higher level of service. On January 28, 2005, the Group Services Agreement(GSA) for the State of Alaska was signed by George Smith, acting State Librarian at the time. The GSA went into effect on February 1, 2005 and runs through June 30, 2005, when it will automatically renew each July 1 for the following three years. OCLC is now in the process of contacting participating libraries to assist in a transition to the unlimited cataloging, ILL and WorldCat services available under the GSA. New OCLC customer libraries can join the GSA anytime through June 2006. Training opportunities provided by OCLC Western will be announced via the OCLC Western web site and Western ListServ.
