Community Profile Kodiak Island Borough School District (KIBSD), established in 1948, is a rural, public school district located on remote Kodiak Island, the second largest island in the United States, in the Gulf of Alaska. Kodiak Island Borough, which encompasses the entire island, has a population of 13,848. The island has only one, small city, Kodiak, where the majority of the population is concentrated. There are six outlying Alaska Native villages on the island, accessible only by boat or small plane. The village populations range from 41 to 276 persons. The only road system on the island is located near the City of Kodiak area and extends approximately 40 miles one way and 15 miles the other way from the City proper. The remainder of the island, with the exception of the six villages, is virtually uninhabited wilderness. Ninety-five (95%) of the 234 students attending school in the Native villages are Alutiiq (Russian-Aleut), or "People of the Sea". With the exception of Chiniak, these remote village communities, Akhiok, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie and Port Lions, are all considered "Alaska Native" villages and are each represented by a federally recognized tribe. Though westernization has dramatically altered Alutiiq lifestyles, the indigenous people of this region have combined western traditions and technologies with their own worldviews to continue a distinct subsistence lifestyle that is uniquely Native.
