The institutes will include teaching and coaching sessions that focus on: 1) integrating phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension into lessons; 2) teaching students how to become strategic readers; 3) understanding how students learn to read; 4) determining the "just right" book for a student and the level of difficulty of books; 6) presenting book introductions that assist with a successful first reading; and 7) providing additional literacy activities to support learning.

Our local universities and colleges are often included in top national ratings for quality education, student satisfaction and quality of environment.
    University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)

UAA, an accredited university, offers certificate, associate, baccalaureate and master's degree programs in 134 major study areas. In Fall 2003, UAA had 14,220 students enrolled.
In response to the rapidly evolving cargo industry and global economy movement, UAA added three Global Logistics degree programs to its curriculum studies in the fall of 1999. The long-term goal is to establish a logistics research center supported by a multidisciplinary baccalaureate program. AEDC is among those organizations helping to develop the curriculum for the Global Supply Chain Management Program and define its long-term goals.
UAA is home to one of only three Federal Aviation Administration certified training centers for control tower personnel and pilots in the nation. This facility runs a sophisticated virtual reality simulator that links the plane to the ground under real life conditions. Tours of this unique center are available.

Governor Signs Budget Bills to Invest Windfall in Alaska
More money for K-12 schools, aggressive infrastructure agenda June 29, 2005
    Wednesday
Alaska Governor Frank H. Murkowski signed the state's operating and capital budget bills at a ceremony in Anchorage Tuesday, investing part of the state's unanticipated $1 billion Fiscal Year 2005 oil windfall in K-12 schools and needed infrastructure around the state. "We began this year with a clear vision to not only to craft a fiscal 2006 budget that meets our responsibilities to Alaskans, but to invest in the future of Alaska," Murkowski said. "We accomplished this with strong support for Alaska schools, a commitment to safe communities and a capital budget that puts Alaska to work." Alaska schools will receive $70 million more in state general fund support in Fiscal Year 2006 and $400 million of the state's oil windfall is used to advance fund K-12 for next year. With this year's increase, the Murkowski administration has increased state support for K-12 schools by an unprecedented 22.7 percent. The capital budget includes $74 million in FY06 and FY07 for school repairs. Other legislation provides for a school debt reimbursement program to provide for school maintenance and construction in larger communities. More than $286 million will be invested in the maintenance and construction needs of Alaska schools.

    Grade Configuration in K-12 Schools
    Nancy McEntire
    2002 (Last updated May 2005)
How do schools differ in grade configuration?
Schools in the United States are organized in different ways: some schools include K-3, K-4, K-5, K-6, K-8, K-9, or K-12; others are organized as middle schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools; and still others consist of students in just one grade, such as a kindergarten center or a ninth-grade center. Some schools include pre-kindergarten. The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (2002) provides data on the number of regular public school districts providing instruction and the percentage of students in membership, by grade span and by state, for the school year 2000-2001 (

The remodels of Chugach, Polaris reflect alternative teaching within By KATIE PESZNECKER
Anchorage Daily News Published: July 27, 2005
Last Modified: July 27, 2005 at 05:50 PM Architects design work space to suit specific businesses all the time. Why not do that for schools? Not just any schools: Chugach Optional and Polaris K-12 run two unusual alternative programs. So, for their multimillion-dollar remodels, architects have given them unconventional-but-functional space to match. Walls are few so that rooms flow into each other at Chugach, a school built around the concept of open space, sharing energy and learning among classrooms and grade levels. At Polaris, the district's only all-ages school, architects have designed a place that's both fun and sleek to appeal to kindergartners on up to high-schoolers. Walls are mostly blank so kids can paint all over them a Polaris tradition tied to the school's creative vibe. Local firm McCool Carlson Green designed both schools.
