Introduction
Our new title, Some Books About Alaska 1994 marks a change in the Alaska Historical Collections' annual publication. Since 1969 it has listed the Alaska-Arctic related publications received by the Alaska Historical Collections of the Alaska State Library. With few exceptions, the Alaska State Library no longer purchases Alaskan adult fiction or children's materials. Furthermore, we have cut back on our purchase of non-fiction publications. Thus, the title change from Some Books About Alaska Received in.... reflects this modification in our collection development policy. The books listed herein are not necessarily held by the Alaska State Library . Please consult your local library or the WLN (Western Library Network) for libraries holding these titles. We are continuing this publication because we feel strongly that an annual annotated list of books is of value to libraries in Alaska. We also think that this list should be as complete as possible for titles that appeared in 1994. Every attempt has been made to have each title reviewed by a librarian. Several Alaskana Librarians from around the state assisted in this compilation. Especially helpful have been Bruce Merrell of Anchorage Municipal Libraries and Nancy Lesh of the Anchorage Consortium Library. I have tried to include titles that have been reviewed, but a few include the note

The Institute of the North
Partners Background
The Institute of the North, founded by former Alaska governor and Secretary of the Interior, Walter J. Hickel, was established as the leading center for teaching and learning about common and state resource management. Alaska is the model for other nations and states of how to manage their land and seas for the mutual benefit of all their people. The Institute of the North has also become a center for study of state, national, and international strategy related to the unique geography, location, features, and assets of Alaska and the Arctic. Its programs convene meetings with top-level regional leaders to formulate state, national, and international strategy. Institute programs include geography, law, security strategy, land-use development, and circumpolar regimes. In 2002, the Institute co-published Crisis in the Commons: The Alaska Solution by founder Walter J. Hickel — a textbook on commons management. As host to the Alaska Geographic Alliance, the Institute is also publisher of the Alaska in Maps Atlas and CD-Rom, and the Harriman Expedition Retraced Web site.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems or GIS is, in its simplest terms, the mapping or illustrating of data on computers. With current software Tribes can:
-Map their own lands -Illustrate cultural, traditional, or subsistence use areas -Show where houses, roads, underground pipes, property markers, etc. are located -Design new houses, new roads, new villages, etc. -Layout aerial photos or satellite imagery With creativity and proper training you can design or illustrate most anything with GIS. For example, here is a basic level task you can do with a GIS: Step One: Map of Alaska created with a GIS Illustrates the state. Step Two: Map of Alaska created with a GIS Illustrates the state, and rivers. Step Three: Map of Alaska created with a GIS Illustrates the state, rivers, and roads. Step Four: Map of Alaska created with a GIS Illustrates the state, rivers, roads, and villages.

July 18, 2003 View a photo gallery of Alaska's Wood-Tikchik State Park by outdoor photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum. GO >> The fishing in Alaska's Wood-Tikchik State Park is world-class. A 1.6-million-acre (647,500-hectare) wilderness in southwestern Alaska, it is home to all five species of native salmon. In September, the world's largest run of sockeye, or "red," salmon surge from the Pacific to spawn in the headwaters of the park's wild rivers. On the Agulukpak River, more than 2,000 trout per mile (1.6 kilometers) crowd the waters at its peak. Catching fish here is easy. Reaching them isn't. The majority of the park can only be accessed by float plane, boat, or foot. Opposing Sides Each qualifying applicant was granted 160 acres (65 hectares). Today the total area of such landholdings within the park amounts to 8,000 acres (3,237 hectares). While the figure is small compared to the park's total 1.6 million acres (647,500 hectares), the land represents some of the park's most ecologically valuable, says Alaska-based writer Bill Sherwonit.

May 8, 2003 In Anchorage, Todd Sformo, a graduate student in biology and environmental physiology at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, retrieves one answer after another as he digs through a thin layer of spring snow to layers of dead leaves below. A secret of the insects' overwintering strategy lies in the blood, known as hemolymph. Last month Sformo and other researchers came to Alaska to harvest that blood and purify the protein within it that allows the insect to "supercool" by lowering its freezing temperature. To get enough of the protein, the researchers will have to collect thousands of the bugs at a rate of 1 microliter (it would take 250,000 microliters to gather a cup) of hemolymph per insect. "I wish they were bigger," says Jack Duman, a biologist at Notre Dame University, in South Bend, Ind. "It would be nice if there were a two-pound stink bug."

«La Sociedad Geográfica de Colombia tiene como Misión: Fomentar los estudios geográficos en general y, en particular, los relativos al territorio de la República de Colombia en los aspectos: Físico, poblacional, ambiental, económico, infraestructural, administrativo y político.»
Colombia California Geographic Information Association (CGIA) «The CGIA was formed in 1994 based on a recommendation put forth in the Report of the Geographic Information Task Force. Since its inception, CGIA has been active in its mission "To Promote the Effective Use of Geographic Information in the State of California." CGIA lead the initiative for the Strategic Geographic Information Investment Act, actively promoting AB 1293 and AB 3431 in the California legislature. We organized an effort to enhance and promote a metadata clearinghouse for California. We have worked with surveyors to formulate an effective policy that more clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of both our professions. CGIA expertise has contributed to the success of regional collaborative efforts such as the New Valley Connexions program, a partnership of the Great Valley Center and the California Trade and Commerce Agency.»
