Students will understand the following: Alaska has presented both benefits for and challenges to the United States. Americans were not of one mind on the purchase of Alaska. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Documents, books, articles, and editorials concerning the plan by the United States to purchase Alaska from the Russians Index cards for note taking Procedures Explain to students that they will debate the issue of purchasing Alaska from Russia in the 19th century. Even though the purchase was consummated more than a hundred years ago, the process of debating will give students a sense of what the government and the people of the United States considered at the time of the decision. Be sure that students understand the following points regarding the nature of a debate:

Alaska "The Last Frontier"
Abbreviation:
AK To the Aleut peoples, Alaska was “Alyeshka”, meaning the great land. Alaska, the 49th state, officially became a state on January 3, 1959. It was purchased from Russia for $7 million in 1867 and was made a territory of the United States in 1912. It is t he largest state in area, almost a fifth as large as all the rest of the United States. It remained largely unexplored until the Gold Rush in the 1880s. Fur trade was the main economic activity in Alaska for more than 150 years after 1741. In the 1880s and 1890s major gold deposits were discovered. In addition, other minerals, particularly copper, tin, mercury, and silver, were also mined. During the 1940s and 1950s large military bases were built. Beginning in the late 1970s, the economy underwent a fundamental change as the state's enormous oil deposits were exploited. Almost a third of Alaska is north of the Arctic Circle. At Point Barrow, Alaska's northernmost point, the sun never sets between May and August. Tourists come to see Alaska's mountain scenery, historic coastal towns and the state's vast areas of untamed wilderness. Mount McKinley in the Alaska Range is North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet and one of the greatest challenges for mountain climbers.

My general interest in the Earth Sciences focuses on the topic of "surficial processes." This discipline examines the physical and chemical processes that occur near the earth's surface. Because the near-surface is an interface between the atmosphere and the underlying lithosphere, an understanding of meteorology, hydrology, and geology is required. The interdisciplinary nature of the discipline is reflected in my training, as I have degrees in both Physical Geography (MS) and Geology (Ph.D). My primary areas of research are three-fold. The bulk of my efforts are concentrated on permafrost and periglacial studies conducted in the Arctic, primarily in northern Alaska. This research has been continually funded by the Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation since 1991, and focuses on energy and moisture exchange between the atmosphere and permafrost, or permanently frozen ground. Permafrost underlies about 20% of the earth's land surface.

Geographic Analysis and Monitoring, and Land Remote Sensing Program Activities

The Alaska Geographic Science Office of the USGS Alaska Science Center , conducts investigations into the use of remote sensing and GIS technologies for characterizing terrestrial ecosystems and land processes in the Arctic region. Many of these projects directly support the U.S. Geological Survey Global Change Research Program , an operational component of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) . The Alaskan and Arctic research activities described in this page relate primarily to the USGS theme of Land Surface Characterization and Land Remote Sensing Research projects being supported at the Alaska Geographic Science Office: Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse

Data sets resulting from these projects in Alaska can be found on the Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.
Geographic Analysis and Monitoring (GAM) The Geographic Analysis and Monitoring Program assesses the Nation's land surface at a range of spatial and temporal scales to understand the rates, causes, and consequences of natural and human-induced processes and their interactions that affect the landscape over time. The program conducts long-term geographic studies of the land use and disturbance histories of the U.S. and produces reports on the status and trends of the Nation's land surface. The program contributes scientific value and knowledge to the spatial content of The National Map
Land Remote Sensing (LRS) The Land Remote Sensing Program seeks to promote excellence in remote sensing for understanding the Earth's land environment.

Alaska in Maps
Alaska in Maps
is a thematic atlas of Alaska. In contrast to a topographic-type of atlas that emphasizes contour lines and selected settlement features, a thematic map offers maps of special topics. Examples of thematic maps found in "Alaska in Maps" include earthquakes, volcanoes, Native language regions, and health care facilities.
" Alaska in Maps" was primarily designed for Alaska middle and high school students. However, it is also a useful atlas for anyone wanting to know about the geography of Alaska.

The Institute of the North , founded by Governor Walter J. Hickel
Institute of the North specializes in how to utilize and care for the resource-rich commons for the benefit of those living in and on the commons. Areas of special study include Alaska, the new Russia, the many regions of the Arctic and other areas of the world that are lightly populated and wealthy in both human cultures and natural resources.
MISSION
Its mission combines both economic relevance and geopolitical urgency as most trouble spots around the world are found in regions where the commons has been mismanaged or exploited.

WRITINGS AND CURRICULA Walter J. Or it may mean that you use your internet access to e-mail the teacher-scientist with questions or comments regarding his/her trip.
  • 2. You must pay the cost of shipping TO and FROM your school. The Arctic trunks cost anywhere from $40-$50 ONE-WAY (weight = 73 lbs). The Antarctic trunks cost anywhere from $52-$60 ONE-WAY (weight = 93 lbs). You must insure the trunk for $1500 (which is included in the estimates above).

Press Room: Bridging Beringia
Upcoming Beringia Workshop to Bring Russian and Alaskan Teachers Together Thousands of years ago scientists theorize that Russia and Alaska were connected by a land bridge called "Beringia." Although that bridge no longer exists, there is still a vital connection between teachers in Russia and Alaska, thanks to a teacher workshop taking place at the Old St. Joseph's Church, June 9-13, in Nome, Alaska. This year's focus is the Beringia region. Russian teachers from rural villages in the Chukotka region and three teachers from Moscow will join teachers from across Alaska including Gambell, Kiana, and Kotzebue. Featured speakers will include Nome's Mayor Leo Rasmussen, who will give the opening remarks. Rasmussen will also present a session called "From Nome to Anadyr /Hope: the Russian Far East Dogsled Race." Some of the other featured speakers will include: Nancy Mendenhall, who will discuss educational challenges in the Beringia area; Charlie Johnson will share information about his Polar Bear research; and Barb Pungowiyi will lead a session that addresses teaching Native ways of knowing. The teachers will also take a field trip to the small village of Teller to get a sense of rural Alaska's geography, vegetation, and climate. The group will conduct a field study in downtown Nome that will allow them to look at the layout of the town, learn mapping skills, and show the teachers the importance of place names in local communities.

The planning group for this workshop conducted an analysis of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the National Council for Social Studies Standards, and the National Geography Standards to find curriculum connections in which Australian content is appropriate. This recognizes that the social studies curriculum is already very full and that integration and fusion is a more feasible implementation policy than attempts to "add on" Australian studies.
