It is at the mouth of Yakutat Bay. The Hubbard and Malaspina Glaciers are nearby. Yakutat History Yakutat Culture The area maintains a traditional Tlingit culture with influences from the original Eyaks, as well as Russian, English and American traders and miners. Fishing and subsistence activities are prevalent. TLINGIT CARVING The Tlingit people are artistic by nature and some people would argue that their fine sense of workmanship and design is best exemplified through the medium of carving. Most Tlingit objects were carved from wood, the most readily available and highly useable substance. Other materials such as horn, copper and later silver were also decorated with carved figures.

SONG: What a Wonderful World
My name is Barbara Logan and I will be your hostess. I arrived in the state of Alaska on July 7, 1977 and have lived in Fairbanks for over twenty-six years. When I was growing up, in hot central California, I always wished to live in a place where there was snow, so I could have a "white" Christmas. Well, now I have my "white" Christmases... also "white" Octobers, Novembers, Decembers, Januarys, Februarys, Marches and Aprils, and sometimes Septembers and Mays - EVERY YEAR! The lesson of this story is:
"BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR." (SMILE) Alaska is a beautiful state, filled with wilderness lands and an abundance of wildlife. It can get pretty cold here in the winter, but the mild summer weather makes up for the winter cold. The Aurora Borealis, or "Northern Lights," as we call them, are absolutely mesmerizing. It's well worth venturing out on a cold winter night to see them dance across the sky. I have a lot of information about Alaska and my Alaska photos on my pages linked below. I hope you can stay a while and experience a little bit of our life here in the "Last Frontier."

From Anchorage the Seward Highway leads to, you guessed it, Seward, on the Kenai Peninsula. The Sterling Highway connects with the Seward and leads to Homer, which is absolutely the end of the road. The Parks Highway starts north of Anchorage in the town of Wasilla (population about 5000). It leads to Denali National Park and on to Fairbanks. The Dalton Highway, once known as the North Slope Haul Road, runs from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay.

The 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition Retraced:
A Century of Change

By Tom Litwin Visit the for more science-related content. How do you gather your students for a voyage through the rainforests of Alaska's Inside Passage? Or, find the time to sail the Bering Sea while keeping your history unit on schedule? Will student presentations be interrupted by the appearance of the Bogoslof Island volcano off the bow? To assist educators with these riddles we ask you to log on and join an Alaskan maritime adventure. Together in the summer of 2001 we will leave the docks of Seattle aboard the 340' M/V Clipper Odyssey and begin The 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition Retraced. We will journey to remote lands, explore interdisciplinary subjects, and travel through time. It has been 100 years since industrialist and railroad builder Edward H. Harriman assembled a distinguished team of scientists, writers, and artists aboard the S/S George W. Elder and set off on a two-month survey of the Alaskan coastline. A half-century before Alaskan statehood, the Elder sailed through the Inside Passage, across the Gulf of Alaska, along the Aleutian Peninsula, and north into the Bering Sea. They observed the influence of Russian Czars, the richness of native cultures, the chaotic events of the Gold Rush, and the grandeur of Alaska's wildlife and landscape. In the company of conservationist John Muir, writer John Borroughs, scientist C. Hart Merriam, photographer Edward Curtis, and artist Louis Agassiz Fuertes, the team of explorers ultimately produced 13 volumes of scientific and anthropological information, photographs, and artwork. The result is a 100-year old Alaskan time capsule waiting for your students' study and examination.

Alaska's geography
Alaska is the largest state in the United States, with an area of 586,000 square miles roughly twice that of Texas and roughly one fifth the size of the lower 48 states combined. Alaska's tidal shoreline is estimated at more than 47,000 miles, more than that of the other 49 states combined. Anchorage, with a population of about 260,000, is Alaska's largest city. It is so much bigger than other communities in the state that other Alaskans like to say Anchorage is only 20 minutes from Alaska. More than half the state's population lives within a radius of 50 miles of Anchorage. The nearby communities of Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer and Girdwood (Eagle River and Girdwood are officially part of the municipality) have growing populations of Anchorage commuters. Fairbanks is the second largest city, with a population of about 85,000, followed by Juneau, the state capital, with a population of about 30,000.

Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962) was the general editor, his visible contribution being especially devoted to the biography portion which includes ships. Excepting then biography, some of the other fields covered in the manuscript are: archaeology, anthropology, botany, engineering, geography, geology, history, law (including international relations); language, medicine, meteorology, oceanography, religion, zoology and special topics, as, the image of the arctic in Shakespeare. Four sets of the manuscript were in existence in 1954; three under the care of the Navy and one in the Stefansson Collection. In 1970, a microfilm was produced and is available for consultation; however, the manuscript in the Stefansson Collection includes additional material never filmed. A 12-volume set, bound in blue cloth, is also held in the Stefansson Collection. The Dartmouth manuscript is housed in 21 Paige Miracle boxes, 11 Hollinger boxes and 1 portfolio. It is a manuscript unique in the physical and literary sense, and the most complete representative of its concept unique still perhaps among the genre of encyclopedias.
