Alaska Geography
Alaska is by far the largest state in land area. If you placed it on top of the “lower 48,” the Aleutian Islands would touch California’s coast, the southeastern coast near Juneau would rest atop Georgia, and the North Slope would cover Minnesota. The population density of Alaska is only one person per 1.1 square miles.
Alaska borders Canada’s Yukon and British Columbia to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Bering Sea to the west, and the Gulf of Alaska to the southwest. The coastline is the longest in the U.S., winding jaggedly over 33,000 miles if you include the islands. If you measure the coastline as a simple, straight line, it is still over 6600 miles long.

Alaska Geography- Alaska borders the northwest edge of Canada and is closer to Russia (just 39 air mi/62 km across the Bering Strait) than it is to the rest of the U.S. The landscape is dramatic and, because it covers such a huge territory, quite varied. In the south is rain forest (Tongass), and in the north is Arctic desert. The state is traversed by nine major mountain ranges and encompasses North America's highest mountain (Mount McKinley) and 17 of the highest peaks in the U.S., as well as most of the country's active volcanoes. It has more coastline than all of the other states combined. The geography ranges from endless miles of tundra to sheer mountain wall, from the densely forested temperate coasts of the Inside Passage to the permafrost of the treeless Arctic Circle. AkLA Census Tutorial Part 6: Understanding 2000 Census Geography: Basic terms and comparability to 1990 Census data
================UNFINISHED BUSINESS================= Last week, I asked why Summary File 1 would answer the question, "How many Koreans live in Anchorage?" but not "How many Russians live in Anchorage?" The answer is that Summary File 1 contains race data and not ancestry data. As I explained back in Week 3, Korean is a subcategory of the "Asian" race category. Only the race categories of American Indian and Alaska Native; Asian; and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander are subdivided. Hispanic origin is subdivided into Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Other Hispanic. As we know from Week 3, Hispanic is not a race, but an ethnic group. Descent from Russia, or from any other country or group I didn't name back in Week 3 is considered by the Census Bureau to be an ancestry group and not a race nor an ethnic group. Ancestry is a sample data question and the first time we'll see it reported will be in Summary File 3, due out June to September *2002* =============NEW BUSINESS: CENSUS GEOGRAPHY============== Last week, I asked you to look at the release schedule available at [http://www.census.gov/population/www/censusdata/c2kproducts.html]. If you haven't done so yet, please do it now. Pay close attention the column marked "Lowest Level Geography." Ask yourself two questions:

Social Studies Curriculum Diamond Social Studies Elementary Program- Philosophy and Framework The philosophy and framework for this social studies program reflects the following beliefs: Social Studies is a basic subject at the elementary level. Social studies curriculum includes a balance of multiple perspectives. Children learn best in a safe environment where multiple perspectives are respected. History, geography, civics and government including current events are major components of social studies curriculum. Understanding past cultures and history (mistakes and successes) contributes to student success in the future. The use of primary documents (e.g. diaries, logs, the Constitution) is encouraged. A democratic government depends upon citizen participation, therefore, social studies should promote "hands on" participatory activities.

John Muir canoed through the Alexander Archipelago in Southeast Alaska (Inside Passage) in 1879. Muir, naturalist, travel writer, and later founder of the Sierra Club, was the first to systematically explore Glacier Bay and Muir Glacier. Glacier Bay was called "big ice-mountain bay" by the Tlingit Indians and by John Muir as "a picture of icy wildness unspeakably pure and sublime." Alaska Book and Video Selections

Alaska Yesterday and Today , by Sarah Eppenbach, 7 th edited by Alan Ryan, 1997, Harcourt Brace & Company. This is a wonderful collection of twenty–eight eyewitness essays about life and travel in Alaska during the past 100 years. Well known contributors include John McPhee who encounters "kamikaze" bush pilots, Anne Morrow Lindbergh who is amazed simply at the sight of a road after a long flight over the trackless wastes of the North Slope, and John Muir with his first glimpses of Glacier Bay in 1879. These and other eyewitness accounts offer an enriching and personal perspective on the real Alaska and will encourage you to search out some of the excerpted books in preparation for a trip to Alaska.

The Aleutian Islands of Alaska extend beyond the line of 180 degrees longitude, which separates the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. If you traveled west from one Aleutian island to the next, you would reach the westernmost longitude of the United States and then, upon crossing the 180 degree line, reach the easternmost longitude. William Henry Seward, secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson, engineered the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. The United States paid Russia $7.2 million. What was called "Seward's Folly" at that time has turned out to be a good buy, producing large quantities of seafood, oil, and lumber products. The number-one employer in southeast Alaska today is government. In Juneau, Alaska's capital since 1906, nearly one out of every two working people is an employee of either state, federal, or local government. Alaska Book and Video Selections

Alaska, an American Colony
Stephen Haycox

Alaska has not evolved in a vacuum. It has been part of larger stories: the movement of Native peoples and their contact and accommodation to Western culture, the spread of European political economy to the New World, and the expansion of American capitalism and culture.
Alaska, an American Colony focuses on Russian America and American Alaska, bringing the story of Alaska up to the present and exploring the continuing impact of Alaska Native claims settlements, the trans-Alaska pipeline, and the Alaska Lands Act. In contrast to the stereotype of Alaska as a place where rugged individualists triumph over the harsh environment, distinguished historian Stephen Haycox offers a less romantic, more complex history that emphasizes the broader national and international contexts of Alaska's past and the similarities between Alaska and the American West. Covering cultural, political, economic, and environmental history, the book also includes an overview of the region's geography and the anthropology of Alaska's Native peoples.
Throughout Alaska, an American Colony, Haycox stresses the continuing involvement of Alaska Natives in the state's economic, political, and social life and development. He also explores the power of myth in historical representations of Alaska and the controlling influence of national perceptions of the region.
